Whoa board training

Well I built a whoa board yesterday its about knee hight with a slight incline ramp on either end. After circling the board a few times with the pup on lead and easing her up and down the ramp getting her use to it I started some training today and she is catching on quick. I can whoa her and walk around the board a few times with no movement from the pup but she does watch me go around. I've been keeping it short with her only did it a few times a day after I let her out to pee. Its looking good buwe got a long way to go yet.

Anyone have any tips on this training they want to share.

You are doing it right.

Slow, calm, patient, and exacting. Move feet back when dog moves, repeat command, praise frequently and take your time.

After a bit, you will be able to push the dog's rear forward and feel it resist moving.

Nice work.

pup is doing good I got her going over on her own at stopping on command already. Quick learner. I cant seem to attach pictures says its to big. But I got some up in my album

In my youth, I "assumed" a lot of finish would be glossed over by bird work. I now discount that. So I say do the slow ground work, you, and the dog will be happier in the end. Slow and steady, you got 7 months!;)

There are several ways to teach Whoa to a dog. Pick a method that works for you. Sounds like you are well on your way.

But you got some good advice, dog training is not a race. Take you time and do it right.

Ok guys good advice. I think I'm taking it slow, only do it a few times a day about 5 min at a time. When would be a good time to start introducing a dead chuacker infront of her on the board to see her reaction. Would this be good or bad at this stage. Or just keep doing what I'm doing for now.

I wouldn't even consider introducing a bird after only 3 days. Train wreck waiting to happen. The pup is stopping on the table. I would say that you will need to move to the ground, different areas to work on whoa. I wouldn't bring a bird into it until the pup is reliable every time you tell the pup to whoa or how ever you do the command. Whoa is not about the bird. Whoa is the command to stop and stand still until I tell you to move. As said above, take it slow. When you think you are to the point that you could use a bird, I would toss a hat, a frisbie, a dummy as the distraction. If the dog moves with these distractions, then he is not ready for a bird. I think I can be safe in saying that when there is a live bird involved, there will be at least one meltdown. :)

Ok sounds good. Thats what I thought but just making sure I'm going at the right pace. I'll keeps with the board for a few more weeks then move it to the ground for a few weeks. If she is progressing I will use distrcations like you metioned. Thanks for the help and keep it coming if you have any more tips. Thanks again.

Works great. Was invented by Bodo Winterhelle when he had a bad back.

Ok here is whats happening. dog is whoaing on command but is getting wise to when I bring her over the board and don't give her a command she will whoa on her own. Any tips on if I should change something or let her do it maybe get a lower board or use 2 boards in my routine.

Similar as to when using the whoa post. the dog will stop before he receives pressure from the rope. Mix it up. don't stop in the same place or stop dog before the table. Maybe come from the other direction. The pup is anticipating what is happening. Try the process off of the table. Good luck

Yeap I've been doing it from both sides of the table, over a few times from both sides then a whoa then repeat from other side and she is doing it. I will place another board on the ground as well to give more whoaing spots if that makes sence. Note this is all being done in my garage not much room but enough to circle wide from the board then bring in closer. Out side will produce more challenges I would imagin. Will try some outside weather permiting.

Agreed- vary the routine.

Now here is a quick question. Dog will come to `here` command 99% of the time but the odd time she will fight me on it. I enforce the command every time I give one. I got her pretty much under control in the house so she doesn`t get up to much no good. But I`m finding that she avoids the `here` command more in the house then out in the field or in the yard. I might need to get her on the check cord in the yard and re-enforce this command. Any suggestions. I was told by a friend that I need a (program) he has labs and trained his own but I never heard of this program stuff before any ideas.

This is what I have done so far

- sit 100%
- stay 100% I can walk away about 20yrds and dog does not move until called `here`
- `here` 99% but in the house having some difficulty
- Whoa so far going good just to whoa with no distraction to move. example throw an object infront of her.
- retrieving 70% so far outside but inside will retrieve back to me 100%

lol I guess this is not a quick question.
