What do you think is the best shot size for those wily cockbirds?

I do feel very fortunate/blessed to be able to hunt wild birds on both public and private land, and from Oct through the end of Dec. I have a friend in VA that used to live in Pine, and he found some birds out there on some public land between Denver and Ft Collins (I think).

Kent fast Lead
2 3/4"
#5
1 1/2 oz.
1,460 fps

That is one heck of a punch for only a 2 3/4" shell!

Yeah, those are sweet shells. I just picked up a box of Federal Premium Prarie Storm that shoots 1500fps. They're:
2 3/4"
#4
1 1/4 oz

I wonder if they're replacing the Federal Premiums I usually go with. I can't seem to find those as easily anymore. I was looking for #5's but all they had was a 3" #5 that shot 1350fps, and I think I'd rather have more speed than more shot.

I think it is just hard to find non-steele game loads period. I had to order a case through Jax in FOCO to get the Kent loads I like. Once I called to request a case the manager there decided to stock the shelves with them. I give credit to him for listening to what we the hunters are asking for instead of the sales reps!

Chad, I will be interested to see how those Prairie Storms work for you.

Well I guess I don't pay to much attention to my shells. I figure if the bird does not go down I probably missed. Then of course I blame the dog;). I have gone to the highest fps copper coated shells I can find, they keep from driving the feathers into the meat and I do not like the taste of lead.

Just in case anyone in the front range area is interested, my old man (Terry Penttila) is the Firearms Manager at the new JAX in Lafayette and you can bet that he's got all the best pheasant loads stocked up. He's a huge fan (as am I) of the Kent stuff. Tell him I sent ya (Bridger)!
