Headin out tomorrow with my boy (26) and his dog. We are headed West River and the boy gets to hunt with his dog for first time. I have hunted it for 3 years now and it is a great dog (Black Lab).

Out group is also having the first annual UGUIDE Road Hunt Contest in the spirit of Fair Chase ( Ha - see other thread on fair chase).

Little does the rest know I won't be participating as my VW Jetta is not setup for road hunting.

At any rate we have group of 12 hunting for 3 days and we murdered em there last year but birds are down about 50% this year so we will see. We will have a good time no less.

Reports to follow......

What are the rules of the road contest, like if you shoot out of the car, (legal in SD), do you get 1 point, another if you kill the bird, another if you can actually drive and never get out of the car and retrieve, 1 more if you can hear after the shot. Demerits for shooting across traffic, or nutting yourself between the steering wheel , the seat, on the gun barrel, or shooting off the side view mirror! Dropping a spent shell into coffee, might actually be two if you leap up from the scalding coffee and proceed with the aforemented nutting. Happy holidays.

Hey I did not know shooting from car was legal in SD? Rules are vehicle with most birds to camp gets free drinks at the pub.

I can already tell the rules were not defined enough as one guy already rolled into camp a night early and will be road hunting all day tomorrow. No surprise though as that one is a road hunting specialist.

The real hunting will begin on Wed when we invoke Operation Pheasant Storm and begin to be schooled by seasoned roosters. Let the education begin!

OK so day 1 produced a good hunt. Hard hunt and all day to get 2 birds per person average for 12 hunters. We also bagged a couple sharptail grouse.

The cover was definitely stunted due to drought conditions.

the hen to rooster ratio was very noticeable as well. Last year we shot 24 roosters in 15 minutes out of a shelterbelt and this year that same belt produced hundreds of birds but they were all hens except for 1 rooster. I had never seen anything like that before.

Well, the coffee is done so I got to go get me a cup and wake up for day 2....

Chris... Just curious on how the last couple of days went. Hope you had a good hunt.

Huh, I thought I posted day two results but guess we were celebrating too much. We ended up limiting for both days 2 and 3. Day two was very nice weather, sunny and low winds. Day 3 was similar.

About 3-4 inches of snow. Birds were near food and cover.

Will have some pics when I get back to town.

The ultimate was getting to see the boy hunt behind his own dog and find his first cripples and shot his first bird solo over the dog.

PS. Weeks 9 & 10 are open at this camp as we are going to hunt week 12 next year.

Here's me and the boy and Bailey the Lab with some birds from the mornings hunt on Day 3. We also shot some sharptails and I got a Hungarian partridge today. I have not seen one of those in a few years.

So the trip recap was a little over 100 birds for 12 guys for mainly 3 days hunting. Based on earlier reports I was expecting the hunting to be much more difficult and expected harvest to be 1-2 birds per person instead of close to 3 or a limit each.

The effects of the drought were as expected and very evident on grass and food plots. Birds were really hanging around picked sunflower fields and corn fields.

We are moving to a hunt at this place week 12 or after New Years so the kids can come and so right now weeks 9 & 10 are open for booking for a minimum group of 6. Pretty awesome value for a late season hunt if you ask me. (there's the commercial).
