Views on KS bird season

I travel everyday in KS as I cover the oil industry in KS for my company. I live near KC and always try to drive the back roads going to my calls. From what I have seen its going to be a real tough year in all parts of KS, the southwest if its not irragated there is very little cover. The center pivot area's look good and you do see birds in those places. The northern tier counties have the best cover and I have seen birds around the Concordia to Salina and over to Abilene and back up to Marysville. That area seems to have a little bit of a hatch. Western KS does not look good at all, not much cover but along the creek bottoms or irragated area's. Maybe because of lack of cover but it seems like the weather did not hurt the turkeys at all, they are all over. I also travel to ND in the Bakken Oil area and have seen alot of birds in that area, more than I have seen in KS.

I was in norton, Wakeeney and hays areas all last week and I thought things looked a lot better than expected(cover and numbrs). Although not as good as last year but still looks like a good year for that area.

I drove the roads west of Liberal last evening looking for birds and only saw 5 was out for an hour. Pretty dismal!!!

I just drove from Manhattan through Norton, McCook and then up to Alliance NE and back the last couple of days. I do this every few months for the last couple of years.

I have seen few birds this year than any previous years. I saw one living and one RoadKill pheasant in this round trip :(

If this area is a highlight in KS this season, we're all gonna be in a LOT better shape (physically....from walkin' so much) by the end of the season:cool:

I was south of Emporia letting the Britt's run in some big WIHA- looking for PC's- nice green stuff down there- had probably 30 pheasant points on a 6 hour run- got some nice pictures- found one group of 8 maybe 11 PC's- couldn't really pin one down- so no shots- but was quite enjoyable

Liberal and the SW- we aren't seeing any young pheasants- very few and far between adults- 200-400 yard pointing dogs who can pin you might get a limit one day- think this is the year for the single hunter and a good pointing dog or two who will put in the ground work- big groups- not good except there are folks you pay to hunt where released birds are

I didn't know there were hardly any pheasant south of Emporia. I know there are a few there occasionally but nothing like what you mentioned. I live 45 minutes east of there.

Ditto what KB said. After the opening weekend we should see a lot less hunters in the field this year. Many will give up because the bird numbers are down so much.

On my way to Hutch I saw one rooster crossing the road west of Lewis. Thought you would want to know.:);)

I can get you close. Now if I could just fit that bird with a GPS tracking device, bingo, season on! ;)

Kansas pheasant numbers

I received word from my contact in the Kiowa - Commanche county area regarding pheasant populations. I hate to sound negative, but this Montanan wont be chasing roosters in the Sunflower State this year.

that area suffered extremely dry conditions and record heat all summer.....no big surprise. it will take a couple years of ideal conditions for the birds to recover.

fsentkilr-
mainly was just looking for a nice area to run the Britt's

take a look at the open WIHA's arround Howard

had parked and was getting ready to head out when a guys pulls up
said he had some poults in a section that he posted-

he drove away but came back- said a fella was rasing and let some birds loose- told him the only thing I'd shoot at were doves and PC's

could have been released birds- was sure enogh a nice run

I think I can see him on Google Earth! As little cover as there is, I think that's how I'll scout em this year!!! ;)
