Versatile Dogs

Does anyone have their versatile dog trained to recover deer? What states is it legal for dogs to recover deer? Iowa, you can't.
 
I know of several people that train dogs for this. The Verein Deutsch Drahthaar - Group North America requires this as part of their testing. I have sponsored and participated in several of these events. I know Missouri allows it under the following rules:

Use of dogs to recover legally taken game
A hunter can use leashed dogs to track and recover mortally wounded deer, provided the hunter:
1. Has exhausted other reasonable means of finding the animal,
2. Contacts a conservation agent,
3. Does not possess firearms or bows during dog-tracking activities, and
4. Maintains control of the leashed dog at all times.
Note: The use of dogs to recover game does not authorize trespass.

Yes, both of mine are trained on deer. I am in Iowa. If I can not recover a deer myself, I will take my unarmed self and my leashed dog on a "walk" in the woods.
I make sure I have nothing on me, not even a knife or bone saw. I make sure my dog is leashed 50ft and harnessed. I NEVER let go of the lead.

To me it is way more important to recover game. I will take the CO gives me if he feels I am chasing game.

The law was really close to passing, but got backseated I think to the Dove bill!!!!!!!:mad: Much more important to recover wounded game IMO.

Mine no it is not. The lady who I purchased my newest SM pup. Yes. I saw the last retrieved deer it took part in. The buck I am told will be at Buck Fest this year. Nice buck.

Awesome thread you guys! I'm such a dork I didn't know that was even allowed to use your dog that way...very cool! Learned a ton on this one!
 
When it comes to finding a missing deer,especially one that I would pull the trigger on,anything goes,law be damned.I put a springer on the blood trail and they find it in pretty short order.This situation usually arises when a friend shoots a deer that he should have let walk until he got a better opportunity.I do not shoot a rifle enough to consider myself a good shot,so I don't pull the trigger unless I am one hundred percent certain that deer is going down.I don't use a hi powered rifle to compensate for my shortcomings as a hunter.If you rifle hunt just as you would bowhunt,you seldom have to look for one.

mstand, if you were referring to me. I currently own one Small Munsterlander. I have purchased a pup. He will be ready to come "home" February 4th.

The sire of my current dog is trained and certified in tracking deer. I forget what the correct term it. I know it is a standard that they use in Germany.

The breeder I purchased my pup from does use some of her dogs to track deer. The buck I am referring to was taken with a bow.
She holds her dogs to a high standard, the kennel name is http://www.hunthills.com/index.html I can state Kris is top notch in assisting anyone who has this breed of dog.

I didn't pursue using my dog to track deer only because I have not harvested a deer in a long time.

Thrilled with this breed of dog in regards to a wonderful pet in the house and a far better hunting animal than I am.
 
Yes, I know Kris and all of her stock. I am assuming your new pup will be out of Cody or Astor(German semen) I think it is. Depends on if the dam is Farrah or Jaika.
She does a good job with her puppy buyers.;)


Who is your current dog out of? Do you have pictures?

Pudelpointers were breed to trail deer in Europe. Son trailed a bow 6x6 bull elk with one morning after about 1/2 mile from spot arrowed. Know of at least two other owners who have used to blood trail deer. I haven't had too!!;)
