USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack will help Pheasants Forever kick off National Pheasant Fest 2011.

Secretary Vilsack will join Pheasants Forever staff for the ribbon cutting ceremony to open the doors to National Pheasant Fest 2011 at 1PM on Friday, January 28th at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Shortly after, at 1:15PM, the Secretary will visit the Landowner Help Room on the Pheasant Fest show floor where he will be making a CRP announcement.

Pheasants Forever is very pleased to welcome Secretary Vilsack to National Pheasant Fest for the second year in a row, and we’re excited to hear what he has to say about CRP in this the 25th anniversary year of the program.

The D.C. Minute is written by Dave Nomsen, Pheasants Forever’s Vice President of Government Affairs

Nice to see the Ag Secretary is aware and supportive of the Pheasants Forever mission, agree or disagree with a lot of issues, but the current administration has restored a lot of the CRP losses of the previous years, and so far at least been sportsman friendly.

Secretary of Ag Vilsack announced today that there will be a new opportunity to enroll more land in to CRP.

I believe he also announced another $8 million dollar grant for habitat improvement (crp, etc.), on top of the $15 million dollar grant issued last year!

I was at the show opener and I may have missed some info about any grants but for sure the big news was that there was going to be another General CRP Signup in 2011 for a same total of about another 4 million acres nationwide. That is good news.

I also got to meet some DC FSA mucky mucks and got to sit next to Dave Nomsen at our dinner banquet table. The one DC guy grew up in Platte SD and has a farm back there he manages for pheasants. The other guy grew up on a farm in Ohio. All good guys doing good work for conservation in Washington.
