UPH gun dog challenge

Generally what are the rules if the dog grabs the bird and brings it back to you?
 
FCS what kind of rules were you thinking of and who would judge i am all for the pointers planting for the flushers and flushers for pointers
 
M, I would think that a trap would count as a contact, but we might want to see it tossed up and shot. Keeping the shooting involved as much as possible.If you get a penalty for a missed bird you would have to shoot first.:D I also think it should be on pheasants, which all of us have shot, or hunted. People not used to quail may be in for too much of a surprise. I know there is people here that sell birds for 5-6 dollars for hens. But we would have to try and find a local source or someone willing to hall birds. Some one will have to be the secretary, except entries and pay the bird bill and awards out of that. It can be done it just takes six or seven people willing to do the detailed stuff. We run our AKC trials with that few of bodies. Dogs can be steady or not, does not matter. So birds even at 8$ x say 5 per entry thats already 40$. cheaper if the birds can be bought cheaper + a little for the awards tacked on. A trophy for 1st in each and a UPH plaque for 2nd 3rd and 4th.

Well there goes my plan. I was hoping the dog would just catch them and save me the loss of cool points when I need two shots.
 
I would be willing to haul birds if we bought them from downhere and I would also b willing to get the rules and ouotline them and send them out or post them on here if we can do that then everyone involved could get ther rules at the same time are we going to have singles competition and doubles or just singles what about ameture divisions or a division for the younger hunters where the dads or moms do the dog control but the kids shoot the birds

Well thats what we all have to set. I would think we would want to do that as well. But say rotate, when you run you go take a turn and plant, unless we can find someone who is experienced at planting. I would be willing to plant a good portion. Since the only penaltys I can think of are a missed bird and a bird picked up off the ground( not to hand) we all could take turns judging, basicly in 2's to count missed shots and count birds not completely delivered to hand. Penaltys could be say a 30 second time ad on. Basicly straight forward as possible. Kind of a redneck fun day.

We have plenty of time if we wait till spring. Where ever we have it the people will have to check laws for permits using live birds and ammo etc.

HIghtail are you crazy first off we will all most likely b in unfamiliar territory and i really dont want my dog to run into the road and get smacked becouse they are chasing a bird and last how would we keep the dogs from entering the other fields after a retrieve that was shot by someone else get real collars are as much a part of this as the dog

Our dogs don't chase birds! or retrieve other dogs birds unless we tell the dog to do so.
They are trained (Wing, shot and fall).

Yes, we are a little crazy about training bird dogs and safety. :cheers:
