Motel, hotel all the way. I was lucky before we had a place in South Dakota. I met someone who wanted two pups of ours. I made a deal to deliver them in exchange for some Snow goose hunting. It worked into a life long friendship. Those friends watched for a place for us to buy. We even bought their motor home. The motor home is used for shorter trips around northern Minnesota. It will never be going on a long trip out of state. As far as a pop up camper. We had one, I would NEVER own another. Trying to keep mice out of it in the off season was a nightmare. They get in the canvasses and chew holes and you got real problems. Also, if it's cold or windy they are not easy to keep warm in. Also, I have no faith in the cheap heating systems in campers. If fire worry isn't enough. Being asphyxiated is a real risk with them IMO. I never run mine at night in our motor home or any of our other campers we have had. I sometimes would light a couple of burners on the stove and crack a window for 10 Min. Then shut them down, just enough to take the chill off. Then back to bed.
Myself, I want a warm comfortable place after a long day in the field, a Hot shower, warm food and a good night sleep. You have to worry about tires, ware and tear on your trucks tranny, fighting the ever present winds in the plains. high fuel costs.

Camping/Hunting
I look at camping and hunting as 2 separate activities that can be combined to enjoy both at the same time. Don't confuse the cost of one with the other - sure, a few costs are shared but most are separate. If you enjoy camping - go camping and pay for it. If you enjoy hunting - go hunting and pay for it. But if you can camp and hunt at the same time - that's all the better!
I have a pop-up camper and attach a 14 x 16 tent to it. I take a day or so to set up camp in an orderly way getting everything the way I like it. I don't want to "ram" hunting into camping or vise-versa. It's one of the few activities in life that are synergistic when combined - enjoying both at the same time and "saving" the cost of a motel because you like to camp.
If you can answer YES to the following 2 questions, then combining these activities is a VERY GOOD deal!
1) Would you go camping even if you could not hunt?
2) Would you go hunting even if you could not camp?

My exploring remote areas and my remote camping is with and without hunting game. For instance shed antler hunting. Exploring a buffalo jump. The ravine with the old growth pine few know about. etc, etc.
The remote experience is at least 60% of why I take long distance trips.

just bought a pop-up camper.I love it . easy to tow cheap on gas will save me time traveling back and fourth while hunting and save money on motels. We use to camp out of tents but oct and nov. get too cold. my pop-up has a great heater and an outside shower for me and cleaning game. Its a great way to hunt and camp all in the outdoors. Makes the experience a whole lot better and funner memories.

Well this is what I have done. I have a topper on my truck so thats my sleeping quarters. I built a 11" high subfloor with carpet and padding on it. You can store hunting gear and guns underneath were you would sleep. Buy a good sleeping bag wear a stocking hat park the truck into the wind give the dog a blanket and call it a night. It is alot warmer than you would think. I have none this down to -15 degrees in a blizzard in colorado snowmobiling. You could also get a small geneator to run a heater and everything else you need. Very cheep and crude but works very good for a 3 day trip. Gas milage would be the same and no motel bugs and on nice nights you can sit under the stars and have a beer or two and the dogs wont mind at all.:cheers:

I do this in Michigan now, Some folks have said it. YOU will not save money!
That being said, you can't rent a room in the middle of a state or federal forest. There are plenty of areas we go that have state campground that are rustic(no water or sewer). That are very close to hunting.
The bigest factor for me is time, It takes longer when pulling a camper, clean up after camping, winterizing, just to name a few. If you have time you bring all your convinces with you. I found a guys who has 4 full hook-ups in his yard for bird hunters in the U.P. in michigan and we used to stay about 3 miles from him in the woods w/o any hook ups.
One other thing to look at is leaving the trailer in an area for a time peroid weeks or month. Find a business store it at, if you paln on going back and forth a couple of times. A friend of mine does this for the whole bird season.

Does it have a RV toilet? If so she will need to know that you can't just hook up and throw the dump valve open. The holding tank needs to fill quite a ways then you dump it. Otherwise you end up with a pile of poo that won't flush away.
