Thistle

Well the FSA just sent me notice that I'm not in complience with the weed control part of my CRP contract---NO SHIT tell me something I don't know, EVERYONE has this problem. I asked them how do you control thistle that is growing in standing water? The names of the CRP I have is FARMED WETLANDS and FLOODED PRAIRIE WETLANDS, I pointed this out to them that these were very well named programs for this year at least as most of it has been FLOODED this year and the darn thistle thinks that its just fine.

Guess what--not their problem
The guy that does the framing of the land says he thinks he can spot mow most of it without getting stuck as long as it does't rain more.

I guess it all falls under the old "SHIT HAPPENS" rule.:D

I like how it's a BIG problem when the thistles are on your side of the fence, but when they are on the state, city, or county right of way, they are no big deal.

I work diligently to rid my land of Musk Thistle and when I go see my sons in Northland(NKCMO), the ditches there are loaded with it.

M.R. I live in rural Clay County, right next to the state/county roads department. It's where I get my thistles!!!!

I have a rare commodity, a thistle eating mare! But I think that processing through the animal makes the seed more viable. Best solution I have is my kids armed with weed diggers. They tie baggies,(carefully), over the head of the thistles, dig 'em up, and burn them. I pay a bounty. Even the teenage girls are enthusiastic when it computes to the monthly texting package on the cell phones! County likes to mow them off about the time they go to seed, watched them yesterday mowing away in a trail of thistle down.

Twhistle Heaven

The national Forrest here (Black Hills) requires CERTIFIED WEED FREE HAY if you bring your horse to ride the trail system, yet the worst infestations of thistle are right here on the public ground (Custer State Park is the worst).
Its a standing joke locally:D

We used to have a standing joke here in Dodge, that I wished was still here. It was a sign someone put on the Arkansas River bridge, "No Fishing From Bridge".

Many here on the forum will know why it is a joke.:)

A lady my wife works with wants to get a "start" of musk thistle, because she likes the way it looks.

It's Bull Thistle up here, and it's everywhere. Afraid we're gonna have to learn to live with it.
Look at the good in it. Great for wildlife. Honey Bees do well on it, Gold Finches in the Fall, thousands of them.:) Great Pheasant cover to. Snow fence, YEP.

Yep we've got the bull thistle in NW Iowa too. Even in the road ditches big time because some door knob thought they are a pretty wild flower and they put the wildflower mixes in the road ditches...dorks!!!!

The Canadian is really bad this year because of the wet conditions--also the hardest to kill. The great land stewards in my neighbor hood are ignoring it whatever kind unless it is in a corn or bean field where it is already taken care of with round-up and tilling. To hell with the ditchs and pastures. I have sent countless hours spraying my measly 13 acres.
