This weather!

Sure is nice outside right now, but I certainly wouldn't feel that way about it if I'd planned a bird hunt around this time. I know of a forum member from TX that drove all the way to NW KS for a hunt that started yesterday. RJT if you're reading this, I wish it would've been colder for you. I imagine if you're seeing any birds at all it is from a distance.

Does anyone think the snakes will be coming out of the ground while it is like this or are the nights still too cold?

I have one planned for next weekend, and am pretty damn depressed about it. On the plus side all of our projects at work are well ahead of schedule, which makes the workplace happier as a whole. I was hoping for 20 degreees and a little bit of snow, but oh well it will beat working. I would think the cold nights would keep the snakes in.

Pretty nice huntin' weather. Maybe a bit too nice for the dogs. Compare to last winter: Yin and Yang.

Not being from a place where snakes are ever an issue, I'm curious.... Just how far west in Kansas would a bird hunter need to be before he started concerning himself with snakes?? I don't care much for snakes.

I'm more worried about the ones on the E side of the state. They have more cover to hide in IMO, which makes them harder to see. Out west I only have to worry about it in the grass b/c everything is so bare comparitively.

I believe there are rattlesnakes in every county in KS but I don't have any sources to back that claim.

BTW, where are you from? I'd like to live in a place where snakes were never an issue (so long as there are still birds there!!).

There are rattlesnakes, cottonmouths (water mocassins), or copperheads in every county in Kansas.

Central Missouri. Don't get me wrong, we have snakes. But in all my years of bird hunting I have never had to concern myself with the prospect of being bitten by a poisionous snake. Don't know a sole who ever has in my part of the world. I just don't like snakes. By the way.... No birds left in central Mo sad to say.

I've seen plenty of snakes on recent openers, but not any later in the season. Also, I hope you didn't get the impression that a lot of folks get bit by rattlers in KS b/c it is rare. I've seen several dogs bitten by rattlers, but never met a person that's been bitten (that wasn't asking for it). Quite frankly the scare the hell outta me:eek:.

No I didn't get that impression. I just come out that way several times a year, and I never think about it until someone brings it up. Nasty creatures! We have them also. I think they are much more rare here. Never seen a live rattler in my 41 years, but I know folks that have. Better them than me.

Cottonmouths in KS?

I wouldn’t have thought that they would be an issue there. That is one mean snake that will come looking for a bite. I had too many close encounters with those guys when I was a kid.

I think the ground is still too cold for many snakes to be out.

My wife went out today and got a couple of birds, .... 1 on a par 4 and one on the par 5, 8th hole :)

Not in pheasant country as far as I know. I think they are pretty much just in SE Kansas... quail country.

KB,

The only general rule is to be on the lookout for rattlers in the warm season on any mountain in the United States up to 9,000 feet, except in California where the range is extended to 11,000 feet.

Solution: Find a place in MT and build a house above 9,000ft and hunt Grouse.

And who's been rattled at? I have three times: Once each in Nevada, Nebraska, and Kansas. Never been struck.
