We hunted a section of gamelands where in the past we have seen holdovers and where this year we saw chicks in the summer! This gamelands is stocked. We put up a total of 5 birds..one hen and 4 roosters and managed to get one!
A really good hunt today, Dugan is on his game ! It was one of those days where the birds flushed on the other side of hedgerows or to low for a safe shot. Not sure how heavily this SGL got hunted during the opener, but there are still plenty of birds there!
Sounds like a good days work. Good for you and Dugan. Will you be hunting all week?
My wife had to go out of town for a couple of days for work so I'm alone with the two boys. I put on their hats and vests and took them out with me and the dogs. Nittany had a great point 100 yards in front of us and held until we got there. The bird ran through the switchgrass and flushed on the other side of the field. If I didn't have to keep an eye on the 7 and 5 year old I could have gotten in a better position but that is OK. The dog work was good and the boys had fun. We also put up a few hens in a rooster only area. I'm happy with 4 birds in an hour of walking. We'll see what the rest of the week brings and hopefully I can work around trick-or-treating.
I do realize how lucky I am. And things will get better when the 50 acres that is being farmed gets more habitat in place. They boys are ready to hunt now and Connor wants to get some squirrels this year. He did go turkey hunting last year but didn't get a chance to shoot a bird. Both have been shooting the .22 over the summer.
It has been a little while since I was up at my property. I do see some deer signs up there but I don't think the numbers are great. There are more deer closer to home but less public land.
I did see this rub on Saturday when chasing birds:
I hope to get out Tuesday for a little and have more time on Wednesday. I'll go out Saturday morning for a few hours. Good luck this week and enjoy it.
Great job you guys:thumbsup: I hope to get out. Mine has his eyes and front legs rubbed raw hope they heal fast. I tried to wrap and he wont leave them alone if not better tomorrow he's getting the cone on the head. I also have a hunt test in maryland on Sunday so training in between somewhere.
Only had 30 minutes to run the dogs in an area close to home. We worked the edges but couldn't produce any birds. I'll have more time on Wednesday and hopefully I'll have better results.
I took the day off from work to get out in the fields a bit. I haven't had much time to get out by myself since Saturday when I got my two birds early. The dogs worked well today and we moved 6 hens and 3 roosters all coming from points. I bagged two roosters with the first coming from Blitz's point and the second from Nittany. Each dog also had a retrieve on the day, too.
Nittany bringing back the 2nd bird with a greeting from Blitz:
The birds and dogs. Kind of hard to see the dogs in the cover.
Since I had some time I hit an area that has the slimmest of chances of holding grouse. It didn't but the walk was nice. Wish it was a little cooler.
Now I remember seeing it. I was surprised to see quail on the cover.
I had about 45 minutes to hunt after work today. Nittany tracked a bird a couple hundred yards before pointing on the edge of the woods. It took my second shot to bring it down. Nittany finished with the retrieve. We were able to have one more point on a hen and then we were done. It was good work for 45 minutes.
It's looking like another good year for PA pheasant hunters. I could do without the ticks, though. Cooler weather would be nice, too.
Took the kids out trick or treating and we saw two roosters a few houses down from home. The boys wanted to go flush them instead of getting more candy.
