The look

quail hound

This is probably more of a flushing dog thing but has your dog ever given you the look? I was hunting quail this weekend and my dog promptly flushed two coveys who flew to private property offering no good shots. We kept working and he flushed another covey which I missed on the rise but they stayed on our side of the fence so we persued them. JP is working and all the sudden he looks over his shoulder as if to say "Hey dumby, you may wang to pay attention because I'm about to flush a bird and I sure would enjoy a retrieve for all my hard work!". Sure enough he goes in hard to an old blow down and puts up three birds. I managed to drop one and he retrieved it to hand. When he delivered it he gave me the look that said "Thanks for getting your s@$*t together." Damn dogs are too much. :D

I know that look. To me it's like she's saying, "are you ready? seriously. I mean it this time. reeeaaally ready? ok, going in hot!"

My version of the look is a bit differenr. I rarely miss on rough grouse (yea right, I suck). But once after a rather long day of dismal shooting my Mac dog walked up to me and peed on my leg while staring at me.

Lmao! Shows how he felt about your performance that day huh?:D I missed 4 easy shots on single quail one day so my dog proceeded to flush the next couple out of range as if to tell me "Well if you can't hold up your end of the deal I'm not going hold up mine either." The dog is rarely the weak link in the equation.

My Springer, Priss "was" a great retriever. As she was retrieving her second not dead yet rooster of the day, the thing really went to work on her with it's feet. She threw the bird down, looked over at me and layed down on it, holding it on the ground with her front legs. From that day on, she found the bird, layed on it and waited for me to show up. Smart girl

It's embarassing, but I'll share a story about "the look". I've had a tradition for several years with my pups that I take off work and go pheasant hunting the day before deer hunting here in Wisconsin. We don't have much for wild birds in my part of the state, so I hunt PHG.

So I get there with my two golden retrievers and start hunting. We're not long into it at all and the older dog gets birdy and flushes one that cuts hard right from a bush it was near/under. Admittantly, I'm not the best shot in the world, but I made a great shot and rolled the bird. YEAH! So we continue on, and just a few minutes later, they put up another bird that I stone cold miss. Ok, whatever. Then just a little bit away from that one, another bird goes up. Should have been an easy one...almost a straight away, slightly rising bird. Yep, stone cold miss. I'll save the painful details. They flushed 3 more birds, that I missed. So I reach into my pocket for more shells. Yep, I'm out. Back to the truck we go. :(

Guess what? They put up another bird and I get to watch it just fly off. I'm 100% sure my dogs were silent swearing at me. End it with one more bird flushed and me with an empty gun.:eek::eek:

Didn't even go back out. I still to this day don't know what the problem was and I've never had another day like it since (including them flushing so many in such a short period of time). I held my head in shame that day. The looks on their faces when I didn't even fire on the last two birds was really something I'll never forget.

One day in Kansas my buddy just could not hit a bird--however I got several of his flushes when they crossed in front of me, after the 4th of 5th time his dogs started hunting in front of me and finally he called them over and started to work some really good looking cover. Here is the funny part--after about 20 yards both of his dogs stopped walked around behind him and came straight to me and started working the cover in front of me--I guess ya really had to be there.:D:D

Jim, JP did the samething to me but in the dove field. I wasn't hitting one day so he went over and hung out by my brother. Traitor!:D

Yep, I used to get "the look" from my black Lab, Deacon. He'd flush a pheasant, and of course I'd miss. The dog would just slowly turn his head and stare at me. I could almost read his mind...

"Really?! How could you miss that?! It was right there! Why do you even load the gun, if you're gonna shoot like that? Screw this, I'm going back to the truck! Dumbass..."
