The bird season is over............darn!

I posted this over on SGW but thought I would see how everyone over here did!

Yesterday was the last day of the 2009-2010 Nebraska pheasant hunting season. We hunted yesterday and had a great hunt in beautiful weather. Today I finished my hunting log and compiled all of the data that I saved and logged for the year.
I hunted a total of 40 days in three states for a total of 179 hours. :):) (The weather here and in Iowa was really bad at the end of December and the first of January and it kept me out of the field quite a few days)
I drove ~5500 miles and spent $440 in license fees and I don't have a clue on how much I spent for food, lodging and beer/scotch for after the hunt. I wore out one pair of boots and a pair of hunting pants and put some serious wear on myself and the dogs.
My dogs had 276 points, mostly on hens but a few on roosters. :D The oldest shorthair (4) is really coming along and the youngest (3) isn't far behind. The Welshie has started to be a good retriever and I can't wait to get her out on chukars later in the spring at the preserve.
I didn't keep track of my misses but I know I had a bunch.:eek: All but three of the pheasants and all of the quail were killed with my Merkel 1620 16ga and the other three roosters were shot with a Laurona 12ga SXS.
I personally shot 30 roosters and 12 quail and 55 roosters and 24 quail were the totals for everyone that I hunted with.
I don't even want to know what each bird cost but again that's not why I hunt. I could probably go the whole season just watching the girls point and having the Welshie retrieve!
Did anyone else keep a log?

My log was very easy this year. Seen 3 birds I flushed out Range, missed one and Bagged one. How was that for easy. But I'm with you Dang it is over........Bob

airmedic1, thatâ??s quite the detailed and impressive log! I certainly wish I had that many days to hunt each year.

My log would go something like this: airmedic1 did way better than me:eek:

Man, that's a nice log you have! I too keep a log and have so for the past five years. I write in where I hunted and how many birds I shot. I usually hunt in a small group (2-3) guys and we haven't missed a weekend in quite sometime. Most of our hunts are public ground with a few weekends of private mixed in here and there. We've hunted all corners of Kansas and have been to South Dakota 4 times now to hunt public ground as well. Since I've started keeping a journal I've averaged 40 birds shot per year by myself. If it's two of us that tag teamed a bird I don't write that down. My best year was 48 in 2005 and this year I finished with 36. It wasn't that the bird numbers were down, but my shooting was a little off this year. Those 36 were roosters shot in Kansas, add another 5 for South Dakota.

I didn't put in there that I usually hunt with one other guy and sometimes my wife. I checked, the most we ever had was six and that was a rare instance. My wife usually goes with me and she is getting to be a better shot every year. My hunting partner and I don't get to hunt together as much as we did a few years ago, we are now on different shifts. He has two English pointers and I have two GSP's and a Welsh Springer spaniel. I am truly blessed to have a wife that likes to hunt and my buddy as a hunting partner. We have only hunted together for a few years but make a great team, we both seem to know what the other is thinking and going to do and both control our dogs to keep them close. It's a real privledge to hunt with him!

I don't keep a written journal but have a keen memory. This past season I harvested 30 roosters, 1 woodcock, and 1 chukkar on public ground in MN (the chukkar was on a WMA. Not sure how it got out there). I also harvested 5 roosters in IL. Harvested 3 roosters and 3 quail in KS.
In one spot in MN this past season I harvested 11 roosters.
It was an awesome season especially since my dog was only 1 1/2 in his second season. We hunted every weekend both Saturday and Sunday (minus 3 Saturday's I had to work) plus the whole week of Thanksgiving.

Man I can't wait to do it again next year.

Those are some detailed logs. Congrats!

For the first time this past season I kept a log of my days in the field. Not nearly as detailed as some you. I only logged the date, where I hunted and the number of birds I personally harvested. I spent 38 days in the field and harvested 47 pheasants and 7 sharptail.

I think next year I might have to consider adding the number of hunters, who I hunted with and the total birds taken that day. I don't think I'll get into logging expenses. I don't care what it costs as it's my "play time" and the one thing that I can honestly say I enjoy the most of any hobbies.

Only 256 days until the '10 opener. :)

I am going to keep a more detailed record of were I shot the birds at next year. This year I just kept track of days and birds I personally shot. 38 days hunting pheasants in 3 states, got 81 roosters. I hope my wife does not read this.

Wow, these are some awesome logs. I really wish that I was more diligent, it would be fun to look back over the years and recall all of the hunts. Either way, I shot 18 roosters this year on 10 outings. One thing I don't wish to keep track is of my shots fired to roosters in the bag ratio. I bet its about 10 to 1!

Those are some well done logs/journals. I keep a journal as well, though mostly the written word short stories of my travels, unique experiences, and conversations with my dogs; not so much totals broken down as posted. But I think I'm inclined to start now, after seeing how you guys have done them...and putting that info in the margins.

Might hep me fact-check my claims when they're published, in case anyone ever called into question my harvest; though like a lot of those that posted- my percentages (as far hits-versus-misses); are not ones to brag about.

Moe;).

This year I was just shy of a case of ammo. Needless to say I had a couple days that killed my average.
