the big three

heres a goal of mine thanksgiving weekend kill a prairie chicken pheasant quail in one day came close havent done it yet ,how many on here have?

Sorry, I don't drink beer, but would take an iced tea.

BTW, it was a few years ago when the limit on lesser prairie chicken in SW Kansas was two, in other words, four rooster pheasants, eight quail and two lesser prairie chickens taken after 2PM. A good day. Have not been able to duplicate that feat.

Last year I did the big three by Plainville KS. I now carry a turkey permit so now I want to do the big four.

Interesting. This is something I haven't even considered, much less done. We always went chicken hunting in the morning, then started hunting quail when we were done, so I've harvested 2 of the species in a single day on multiple occasions. You've presented me with a new challenge and I thank you. I'm going to have to chicken hunting in pheasant country now.

MR, that's one heckuva day to take a LIMIT of all 3 species. Congratulations!

i know i thought it would make a cool pic been thinking of it lots scenery background and such, but first things first THE HARD PART

I've had a pheasant, quail, and chukar in a day but never a prairie chicken.

Actually, it was not me, but a hunting buddy that I took hunting on my place. I had a few birds that afternoon, but my buddy was in the right place at the right time to get his limits. Somewhere in my photos is a picture of him with all the limits. I sent it into a magazine without his knowledge and he was pretty excited to see his photo there. I also sent in a picture of my mother with her first whitetail buck at age 75 and it was published too.

I think the hardest part of that would be the chicken, but then again, I don't really know where to look for them yet.

Scout some beans fields in an area with grassy hills. They love beans and they sleep in the grass (or trees, I've seen them in trees). The Flint Hills and Smokey Hills regions of KS both have chickens. If you want to hunt them with your dog, find out where the birds are flying to when they leave the beans and find them in the morning. Or, if you just want to take one to say you've done it, find out which way they're entering a bean field and pass shoot them. Until their pattern is disrupted, they'll enter the field the same way every time; almost like clockwork both morning and night. Mid-day is pretty much a toss-up. They may go back to the same grass they slept in, or you may even find em' on a power line.

A buddy and I were hunting around Wilson lake last year and both our shorthairs went on point at the same time about 50 yards from each other. He walked in first to his dog and a covey of quail got up. He shot two quail off the rise and when he shot two roosters jumped up in front of my shorthair. I shot one and missed the other, but when I shot a prairie chicken got up out of the milo and headed back directly over my buddies head. I was yelling for him to shoot as I was too far away. He thought it was a hen and by the time he realized different his two shots were too far out and he missed. But we came close to harvesting all three in a matter of 10 seconds.

I get pretty excited when I SEE all three, let alone shoot all three. We have never gone after chickens except in the early season. I think we could have done it a few years ago on a piece of property that had lots of chix, but we left them alone to keep working on our pheasant and quail limits.

I have gotten prairie chickens and quail in the same hunt, and quail and pheasants in the same hunt, but never all three. I have also had opportunities to shoot turkeys while upland hunting.

Oh yeah, I have also had plenty of upland hunts where we take breaks between fields to jump a pond. So how about a pheasant, quail, duck, and a goose? That's a big-4 I've done before.:D:thumbsup:

Natural Trifecta?

I've had a pheasant, quail, and chukar in a day but never a prairie chicken.

But that would have been on a controlled shooting area or similar situation, correct? I can't think of anywhere in the US where there are natural populations of chukar, pheasant, and quail within a day's drive. Maybe it could be done in Utah and/or Nevada with some long drives between species and some very good luck.

Quadruple

Idaho. Quail, Huns, Chukkar and pheasants would not be impossible in one day

Now you're talking a natural quadruple. What a thrill that would be. Have you done it or seen it done?

We have shot chukar, huns, quail on the same walk from the truck, also had a nice point on a sage grouse (wasn't in season though) on that same walk. On another trip we shot quail, huns, and chukar all by 3:00pm and hunted pheasants for the last 2 hours of daylight, we were only able to put up two hens, we were really trying for the quad. All wild birds. It can be done. That hunting spot has since been refered to as magic mountain by me and hunting partner. I know of a few places in that area where you can get into multiple species of birds in the same hunt, it always makes it interseting.
