Teeth cleaning.

I got tired of paying to put the dogs under to get the teeth cleaned. So I went to wal mart and bought a tooth cleaning kit just like the dentist has. Now I thought no way I would be able to do it but low and behold, it was easier then I thought. A helper scratching an ear helps. But the tarter comes off easier then one would think. Big chunks some times:eek:. Yuk. They don't like brushing, and chews of all sorts don't seem to be the answer either. I have been told to use big kibbles and so on. Nothing works. After a few years it cakes up again. The gums are kinda like soft flaps at the base of the tooth. And it seems all of it stops at the base of the tooth or edge of the gum. You can easily place the scraper in along the gum and pull or scrape the gunk off. The first chunk is the hardest to snap off sort of. But after a chunk comes loose it's like melting ice on a side walk after that. And the rest goes easy. If the dog lays still and alows you to do it, your done in a couple minutes. I did River's and it was a huge diff. Just did half of Lady's. The other half later. She is a bit more squirmyy. But if you seen one side compared to the other, you would flip out. Now I am no dentist so do at your own risk. But for my dogs they will be keeping more tarter off, have better breath and less vet bills from now on.:D Very minimal bleeding but there will always be some on every tooth. At least that was my experience. Now if there is a problem I will still have a vet look in to it. But for 300 smackers, cleaning I can do:thumbsup: I don't polish them like the vet. But just give them a raw hide with the tooth paste on after. The polish from my vet only lasted a few days any way. But any serious problems I will still take them in. Or if your putting a dog under for other reasons, just pay the 30-40 bucks to get them cleaned if they need it at that time. Much cheaper to add it in.

Doggie tooth paste. tooth paste for humans will caue them to puke.
Mine like the doggie tooth paste. It's flavored in either beef or chicken.
I brush their teeth once or twice a week. Takes bout 5 mins /dog.
If you keep up with the brushing you do not have to scrape.

Yes I use CET dog tooth paste. And thats great you can. But brushing for some reason they hate, good luck. But cleaning I can get done. Go figure. My dogs teeth get build up around here more I think then many. I wonder if it's the water or something. Even with a softner. Strange. But it is what it is. They all now have pearly whites.

I have actually started to do the same thing. Although, I didn't buy any kit, I just use a small metal tool that seems to be shaped the right way to make it work.

Brushing Mojo's teeth is impossible, he tries to chew and eat the paste and whatever but I find that scraping the tartar off every 6 months or so keeps his breath smelling not terrible (amazing that it seems to be the tartar that makes the breath smell) and teeth looking nice and healthy. He will struggle a little but as long as he gets a big treat after he is content enough to hold still and let me do it.

I bought a dental pick kit a few months ago on eBay for $6. It works great. That stuff you scrape off really, really stinks. If you get one on eBay, I reccommend ordering a skin stapler for $9 as well. That has saved me a lot on vet bills.

FC, who makes the dental kit and what is it called. I am trying to find it on the Walmart web site but can't find any with a scraper like the dentist has.

Dentek. Has the pick, and scraper tool with the flat edges. Thats the one I use. Not so much the pick. Has a mirror as well. I used it on my self first and it works well.

Here's a sugestion for those that have responded to this thread: ask your dental hygentist for her/'his old instruments. I've been cleaning my dog's teeth for 40 years.

The easiest way to clean is placing the dog on top of your workbench, with a good light; cotton balls help keep things clean.

Good Luck...

Cool John. Have you noticed that you need less visits up town? And has your vet said it looks fine with what your doing? Also I find little on the inside of the tooth, do you notice most or all the gunk is on the out side edges?

this is a great thread. Thanks for all the tips guys. for whatever reason, I had NOT even thought of trying this. will do for sure now

Finally getting around to answering...been in Canada for eight day's with the Lake Trout.

Most of the tarter is on the exterior part of the tooth. My vet(s) have never suggested that they do the cleaning. All of my dogs dislike the toothpaste and brush routine, so I scale occasionally.

Check with your hygienist for misc. tools...
