Still at it.

Weimdogman

Well-known member
Hunted with a couple other board members from my pf chapter. Had a couple of our sponsors as guests. Started a 9° with a 15 to 25 mph saw wind. We Hunted our 1 members private ground and another private piece I have access on.
I ran my 3 weims fellow members ran 4 vdds a gsp and a spaniel. One guest had a decent lab. Hunted for 4 hours thru cattail sloughs , grass ,and some willow patches. Saw lots of birds and bagged a dozen.
Everyone got at least a bird and a chance to miss at least 1 more. I missed 2 long high pass shots at 2 birds. Switched from 5 lead to steel deuces and canned the 3rd opportunity. I shoot a short barreled gun 24" so not much sight plane for pass shooting!
Had all 3 of my dogs on point/back multiple times and we had 5 dogs pointing / backing in one patch. Produced 2 hens from the 5 dog point. We did see about equally #'s of hens and roosters but definitely had the most points on hens.
Last bird I shot was 1 of the smallest roosters I have ever harvested. I have harvested birds not fully adult plumed that were bigger.

Sounds like a great outing, the wind can real be a difference maker when connecting with birds. Hunted with a board member from our local chapter this season with very similar conditions. I can't imagine hunting with the pack of hounds you had for that hunt. What state are you in?

Now that's dogpower Weimdogman! sounds like your group had a great time, with some fine dog work. Thanks for your report.

South Dakota is where I live. Eastern half of the state. With all the dog power we are still split up pretty good.

I will try and get some pics as I plan on getting out 3 to 5 more days.

Dude that's a crap ton of dogs, why so many?
Because we have them😉

Some may know the vdd guy as he not only competes but also judges. He doesn't get out as much as I do so he is just getting grass time in.

I had hunted my 2 for 4 hours on Saturday and knew they would wear down a little so I brought the fresh dog along also. Willie ,the fresh dog , does not have the bird search ability of the other 2. However once you get into birds Willie is a fantastic dog. He is a screwball until he gets scent. He is a screwball after the hunt is through. Wants to play chase with the other dogs and make the rounds checking everybody out.

The other dogs belonged to 2 guys and the spaniel is pretty much a retriever. Dog had been hunted for 5 years on a preserve where staying back and retrieving was the safest option.

Dont worry about the hayseed like hyresmack, they dont appreciate the beauty of watching dogs in the field, let alone the discipline of the dogs to honor and not break or bust the points of others. Please post the 5 dog point if you have it. I have a pic of my 3 britts pointing/honoring, from back in the 35mm days.

I have been terrible about taking pictures. I will try and get some this season. The 5 dog point/back probably encompassed a 40 yard circle with 2 dogs pointing 1 bird and 1 dog backing. The other had 1 pointing and 1 backing.
These birds were in rather light cover and there was ample wind to carry scent.

So friend called me yesterday said he was taking some farmers out hunting on Friday if I would like to join. (Translation- could use some help and your dogs) I told him I was afraid I was busy all day.
Well today I thought hell he has spent money to plant birds and some of these farmers are involved in conservation efforts which his place is a showcase for so... I made some time. Met up at 1 and there were 8 guys there and they had 4 dogs. Friends capable spaniel and ok gsp , a field bred golden who was a little out of control and a laid back lab.
I went without a gun planning to take pictures. Well it was a little crazy , between goofy planted birds , out of control dogs , lots of talking/yelling and poor shooting I didn't dare pause to take any pictures. I hunted a 60 acre piece- small trees-shrubs-10 ft evergreens and some grassy draws with a little cattail patches scattered thruout.. Place is a pheasant haven but the stocked birds are for the group/beginners guaranteed success. We were out there a hour and harvested 18 or so. There was still another 15 acres to hunt when I dismissed myself saying I only showed up to insure there were enough dogs and they had that covered. There were 3 more guys also.
I can tell you this , a steady dog gets severely tested in this environment. I saw my dogs at various times pointing birds that were visible and moving. As my dogs are standing in charges a different dog trying to catch the bird. Bang bang bang and 4 dogs are chasing. Mine are steady to wing so they stand there looking like wth? If the bird went down mine were in on the retrieve and my male got 75% of them. No fights only 1 tug of war where the gsp grabbed a bird in my dogs mouth and was pulling. I called my dog off and the gsp which won't deliver to hand, walked about 10 steps and dropped the bird when walking off.
I got together with the group afterwards at my friend's place where he was hosting a casual dinner. Friend said 3 of those guys had never hunted before and thought it was a blast. Guy with the golden thanked me for helping and said your dogs were a big help. All were having a good time and hopefully some gained a new appreciation for conservation / wildlife.

Sounds like an event you knew you should avoid. Those fellas had a good time without trained dogs as many of us do. There is no requirement or need to have a dog steady to this or that or retrieve to hand or foot, to enjoy hunting or help harvest birds. You are out there for more/less seeing how well you trained your dog, these guys are hunting and learning to hunt, not dog trainers as most people are. Few of us require as much from our campanions or have the time or desire to train to the extend you deem acceptable. Just no need to run-down our untrained canine companions, which many cases fill our game pouches as well or better than the trained counter parts.

No as I stated I went to help a friend. He has the spaniel and short-haired. 2 dogs for 8+ guys in his habitat isn't enough.

My dogs are not trained to a high standard - the bar I set is - fun to hunt with- do not run game off. I know hunting can be enjoyed without solid points, steady backs ,steady to wing, steady to shot steady to fall and retrieve to hand. Here is where yesterday wasn't all it could be, the golden had high drive ,50 to 100 yards and flushing birds. Lots of yelling here here here. Dogs not steady to wing , shot ,running after every bird that flushed and busting other birds while at it. Lots of yelling here, here, here.

Yes I did consider it a live training experience. I do enjoy others appreciative of my dogs and how well they do their jobs. If I am wrong for that so be it.

That is why I never hunt in large groups or with unknown dogs. It can ruin good dogs and even result in injuries to your dogs. Everyone to their own as to what a "good hunt" is, but from my perspective this sounds like a nightmare.

Last hunt of the year for me in Nebraska! Hunting in January and not walking in ankle deep snow is awesome. We hadn’t been out for a couple weeks so ol Murf was a bit juiced up. Been a great year, hunted every chance I could and got a ton of bird contact

So I hunted yesterday by myself running all 3. I only had a chance to take a pic with 2 dogs on point. Couldn't get right , blinded by the low sun.
20 some degrees with a 15 to 20 mph wind which was out of the west but kept switching s.west, west n.west. scenting conditions were surprisingly poor. Hunted private ground and never had a chance. Probably saw 30 birds, 25 were hens.

Today I hunted with my pf guys. I ran 2 weims, guy ran his 4 dds, other had the spaniel and gsp,and other guy had 2 labs. 1 lab was rather old but the 2 were ok. They did point , and were always close. All of the dogs have hunted quite a bit this last week so energy levels were manageable. 6 guys in all and we got 17 birds. Count 18 as we a lost cripple. Not on my side!

I was planning to take pics but I kind of got the shit details. These guys all talk too damn much and birds were wild. I fumbled to get my phone out a couple times but it wasn't to be. I did have my phone out with my female on point. I could see hen tail feathers sticking out of the snow 24"s from her nose. As I moved to get a great shot from down at eye level , the bird flushed right into the dogs face. Of course she caught it without even moving. I went to recieve the bird and noticed neck color. First hermaphrodite bird I have ever seen in person.

I see there have been threads on here about this before. Bird was small , no spurs , no eyepatch, didn't check for sex organs so I don't know if it had both. A little neck color and breast plumage like a rooster.received_483703099828494.jpeg
