Steel shot for Dove.

So we now have several places we have to use steel shot to hunt Doves.
What size shot do you use in steel for doves, and where do you find it?

Remington makes a 7.5 steel "heavy dove" load - $8.00 per box. Available at Gander Mt. I didn't check Cabela's...

Good Luck with your hunt.

Lots of people in the old days used #6 lead. I have some # 6 and #7 for the .410 in steel. I use modified choke. In my sharpshooter past, I use 3-1-#8's in lead, and was never disappointed. When the doves are educated, a little range and bigger shot helps, that would be the second morning of the season:).

steel shot

for ducks and geese i use # 6 going about 1600 ft.. i need multiply hits therefore the smaller shot, but then i am shooting them with a 28 ga. or smaller. i use mod. chokes. that 7.5 in steel sounds great for dove, remember steel shoots tighter patterns so open up your chokes to something like imp. or sk 2. at that speed no dove will be too far.

cheers

That's what I use when steel is required. The way I shoot, at 8 bucks it's like 16.00 a bird.

I am shocked that Wingseeker hasn't commented that Hevi-junk is the way to go. Then you could spend like $100/dove. :D

Lots of steel shot available in #7.5 for $6-8/box. If 6s will kill pheasants (and they will just fine, 100s of them in my journal records), then 7.5 steel will kill doves.

steel shot

they kill pretty well when you hit the bird, actually i have found that the birds don't really care what they get hit with, biggest problem with steel it has a shorter shot string so you have to shoot better

cheers

Went to check my trail cams tonight at some of my farms and there are doves flying everywhere! Saw hundreds if not thousands within 2 hours.

Thanks. That is what I was planning to buy, if I can find some.

Winchester experts come in 6's or 7's and the 6's are more better on doves and at least here in Wisconsin they are pretty easy to find and priced similar to cheaper lead loads.

I'll send you a link in a pm too.
