Sportsmans Warehouse closing 29 stores

Just saw this on thee www and called my local store (5 minutes from where I work).

Sure enough, they're closing in 60 days. Still have a bunch of unused gift cards.

I'm very surprised because it's the go to place for hunting/fishing gear. Much better stocked than the mom/pop stores, and Wal-mart quit competing in this niche. Plus, they carried upland bird hunting supplies.

I'll be heading there over lunch tomorrow.

That news is just a sign of the times. I like to go there but it about 20 miles away. They just a Joe's across the street from it so I think there sales are hurting somewhat.---Bob

Looks like the Sioux Falls store is on the list to be closed. Hope that Scheels and Cabella's can hold things together in our area. Sportsmen's was a very nice store.

The Sioux Falls store was the only store I ever stopped at on my way out to SD. That really sucks.

I just ran Sportsman's up on the internet to see what I could find. Not much re closings.
What I did find is that they were purchased by a Canadian group, UFA, apparently last fall. UFA is described as a type of co-op that serves the rural areas and Sportsman's was to be a "good fit."
Apparently NOT!!!!

I liked the copetition in Sioux Falls to Scheel's. I did buy a gun for my grandson and a fair amount of shells, fishing and cooking items. If anything, I thought traffic was picking up a little more on my recent visits. They were also good to the dog clubs, had seminars etc.

Here is the announcement found on the sportsmen's warehouse site.

Looks like 23 stores will be liquidated, including the SF store and other stores sold to UFA. I looked at the UFA website and it looked like they are in the farm supply business and nothing in sporting goods so I wonder what they are planning for the purchased stores.

Hope they have some bargains during the liquidation process.

Wichita, Kansas is on the list to be closed. Too bad, they have a full aisle of fly tying materials. I'm just getting started tying, guess I'll have to order in or just settle for what's at Gander Mountain. It's the difference between a 6X10 foot booth and a 40 foot aisle full on both sides. That didn't count the finished flies and equipment, just the fly tying material. Hmmmm.

Sportsmans Warehouse

I work at the Roanoke store that is being closed in May. It really is a shame. This area is a big time deer and turkey hunting area. Prior to Sportsmans coming to town all we had was Walmart and a couple mom and pop stores. Since we opened in Nov. 2007 Gander Mountain as opened here, so at least we will have a decent store in the area. The guys I worked with are great, all good hunters. We had expert deer hunters as well as turkey hunters. I fill the gap as being the upland guy as well as the waterfowler.
I'm sure looking forward to the upcoming season. We have hunted SD for many years. This year again we are hunting with Uguide. We hunted at his Cattail Haven last year in a 50 mph wind and snow, killed a pile of birds and had a great time. This year we are hunting his Pheasant Camp and we are really looking forward to it. One thing about being unemployed, maybe I can make 2 trips to SD this season.

I think and it is I think UFA bought those stores, because they are close to large areas of farming. They are like a Big R and other farm supply stores. They are a lot of large grain operations around here and that store is close to Idaho farming too.---Bob

Found this out last week, and the only Sportsmans warehouse in Indiana is on the chopping block, 30% off already on friday hope they have a few things left by Tuesday.

They were not to serious about slashing prices in Sioux Falls as of Friday last week but will see where they are at tomorrow.

I do Cabelas and gander Mountain more often, but did go to Sportsmans from time to time. Went there alst night to check out the sales, not very impressed. Most things were no more than 10% off, I would have expected more than that. I did get some steel shot though for $9.99 a box, that was pretty good.

Sportsmans closing

As of now at my store in Roanoke Va. ( I assume the other closing locations are following the same process) there is no discount on firearms and ammo. Scopes are reduced 5% , dog stuff is reduced 20% that includes E collars ( which are going pretty fast). Most everything else in the hunting is reduced by 10%. This is kind of a fliud situation as all the stock in the store has actually been sold to the liquidation firm which is calling the shots on discounts. If you have your eye on a in stock firearm I think a good time to go to the store would be somewhere around March 28. The intention is all the stock in the stores will be sold on site before closing the doors for good. They told us last Monday that we would stay open up to 60 days. If you don't see something that you want keep checking back , because as odd as it may seem, we are still getting shipments of stock.

not to pour salt on the wound as this is a difficult time Im sure but discounting 5% is less than a regular sale discount. Hardly a liquidation price it seems.
