South dakota success

Dakota hunting a big dissapointment

Hunted near Kennebec this last week. This area normally has excellent hunting. The drought did a lot of damage. There was a good population this summer which seemed to be considerably less by hunting season. Grass cover is much lower and thinner than normal and food plots had less feed in them. Birds were bunched up much like they bunch up later in the year and they were extremely wild. There were less roosters than normal. We had two in our hunting party and shot 5 birds in 4 days. Normally I used to limit out in 2 hours or less when hunting by myself. Other hunters I talked to had similar stories. I was hunting on private ground.

15 sharptails (3 from the day before that we are going to mount), 8 roosters and 1 normal sized hun..... found a couple places with birds, hundreds of sharptails, 2 big flocks of huns and a enough roosters to make the dogs happy....

1 note: it was kinda BS to see the WIA's mowed or grazed and the fields next had standing grass with paid hunters working them.....funny thing is we did not pay a dime, just worked what we had and with excellant dog work and a little luck in our shooting got more birds than the other guys that stayed in our motel....to the tune of the day of the pic there were 3 groups we talked to that paid 200 a piece to hunt private and between them ( 12 hunters ) they shot 5 roosters, and 4 sharptails......$2400 to hunt private....1 paid for a couple cute girls lunches and they offered to make the calls and wrote me detailed maps..plus they were more than willing to give up their phone numbers to make sure i called them for drinks after...!!!!:cheers:

And what part of the state were you hunting? Interesting and satisfying story - there is still( kind of) a free lunch!

Sounds like a dream. ha Did you ask to see if they wanted to come with?

pretty much, he looks just like Chewbaca.........petite he is not! very vocal too, a lot of fun just hanging around the house. great dog,all business in the field.

Where's the picture of the dog we are talking about? First post under another members name? Who was the father? Heri?
I've seen a hundreds of Pudelpointers (raised 136, own 6 now) and have never seen shading on one like that. I have had a couple of Chewies as we call them that tend to be lighter than usual, but not like that. Head looks very typical.

DeJavu is a pup Bob kept for stud fee from my son's dog (Prairie Trout's Bonnie) . Your dog has to go back to the Birchwood breeding I had in my first litter, 1990. Small world but then the Pudelpointer world is.
