South Dakota Questions

Hope to head to SD from Arkansas in about two weeks. There will be two of us and we are both very excited about the trip.

A couple of questions: What pieces of equipment should I have in my truck for safety reasons. I expect cold and snow and was curious as to what y'all carried when you went out to prevent getting stuck, etc. I assume a shovel, first aid kit - what else?

Any thoughts on a location as far as a town goes - would like to find a small town with a motel and cafe that we can base out of and hunt the public ground in the area. Have some friends that stayed at a Casino - not into the "casino" thing - but it sounded like nice accomodations. Would rather be more out of the main hub where the crowds will be less.

That is a good question, as I remember things from back there. A blanket a good warm one some people use a sleeping bag. Candles, big, fat ones and a fireproof container to burn them in. You can use the candles to keep warm. It is surprising how much heat you can get from them. Save your gasoline/fuel for travel. Water and Food like Granola Bars, Jerky, that sort of food. High energy food is the best. Of course Flares, chains for tires and a small 2 way radio, that is a true radio, that you can call for help on. It should have the most range you can find, 5-10 miles at least.

One piece of advice that has saved a lot people, STAY WITH THE VEHICLE. More people have died trying to walk for help......Bob

make sure your truck including tires are in tip top condition
lots of raods get blown over with snow and you have no idea where the center of the road is.
Full tank of gas when you leave in the morning
a sturdy shovel
and plenty of sammich's-just because sammichs are good!:D

A good shovel, chains, come a long, rope, blankets, water, candles, matches, high lift jack, cat litter, jerkey, candy bars ,a flashing light to attract attention and I like a hand held cb radio and my motor club card and knowing here the heck I am at. :)
I always throw in an extra set off clothes, from underwear to a coat.

And if you have dogs. a good skin stapler,we were there 2nd week of the season and 3 dogs in our group ripped there skin open from barbwire, I had one and put 18 staples in 1 dog, 13 in another, and 5 in another, It was very nice to have, and they all healed up well, with some anti-biotics, Its hard to find a open Vet in the middle of nowhere..... good luck:cheers:

A Buddy Heater and several disposable LP tanks , I NEVER leave home without mine. It could be a long time before help arrives. It's nice to keep warm. They say indoor safe but I still leave the window a crack to let in fresh air.

CO detector isn't a bad idea if using one either

Good lists there. I carry most of that stuff and also tow strap, tow chain, tow shackles, etc. So if either I get stuck or find someone stuck I have the right stuff to try to get out. A cell phone and GPS would be really good, in case you have a cell signal you can report your exact location. Looks like I may be out there starting this Saturday toughing it out with my dog and self as no one else I know can make it, or wants to make it based on the current weather.
