I was thinking to myself that with all the bird/dog/gun talk across multiple species why this forum wasn't called....ultimate upland bird hunting?

Take for granted that here in KS we have most all upland birds but not the same everywhere else. Even though we'll use the same guns, the same dogs, same trips, it's still a different hunt, hence the specifics towards Pheasant...I get it.

So my next question -- what's the quail population like in MN, SD, ND, IA and other areas in which we talk about??

Southern,

you won't find quail in ND (and maybe not pheasants this year). Same for MN. As is case in Iowa, same is in SD. You will find them way south and where there is a mix of draws, hilly country and woody cover. Probably more in IA than SD.

I hope that helps.

Webguy is probably getting started on Ultimate upland bird hunting dot com.

I shot one around Aberdeen years ago - but that might have been during the spell of all the warm winters...

Quail

I've been hunting S. Dak. for the past 15 years. Put up 1 covey of quail, about 12-15 birds. These were in a creek bottom. I was in the southeast corner of the state.

I shot a few growing up in Charles Mix and Gregory County. Not many around though.

Gary, were you quite surprised to see the covey?
