Snow Geese Guides

Hey guys,

Not sure if this is best place to post this, it is obviously not Pheasant related.

My brother and I are thinking about taking a trip out the SD/ND for a Spring Snow Goose Hunt. Neither of us have hunted them in the past so we feel a guided trip would be the way to go. Does anyone have any recommendations on guides? I can Google it and find plenty, but if anyone has first hand knowledge that would be great. From what I can tell we would need to get going pretty fast, looks like the migration generally ends by April.

Thanks,
Mike

Last fall I pheasant hunted near Madison SD, just south of Lake Thompson. All morning long birds were going out to feed. I started to research the idea of hunt as well. It appears the east side of the state is the main area for the Spring migration. At least if you hunt around Madison you will have numerous options for accommodations. Good luck this Spring, 2 Labs.

I would do some reading on some of the duck hunting forums. Guys are pretty voiceturouse on guides. Duck hunters refuge or nodak outdoors are a couple forums.
I believe Tony Toye hits SD after the birds move out of Missouri.....he's got a good name going.
I would use some real caution when picking and look for references. I have heard more bad than good with snow geese guides. I would guess most would be booked for hunts, mouth you may be able to get on a cancelation list.
I freelance hunted and it was some of the most fun I have ever had. First two years we came home with 20-30 birds per trip.....the last hunt was just short of 400. Go in with low expectation on birds harvested.
Enjoy the spring migration....something that everyone should experience.

I have a few clients that head to SD each spring for snows/Blues/Ross. They use guides and seem to do pretty well. If you'd like I can make a couple calls on Monday for contact info.

Let me know.

Thanks guys, very helpful information, I appreciate you taking the time to reply.

Nick that would be great, even if they are booked this year it would be nice to have a few names for next year.

No experience hunting with them, but they are a nice bunch of guys..

Prairie Storm outfitters..

On facebook also.

We hunted with Neu outdoors last year and are leaving next week for another go at it. I was very pleased with the whole trip. They hunt in either Yankton or Aberdeen area.
PM me if you want more info

Thanks for all the info everyone. I spoke to a few guides recommended here, and Nick is getting me another. I think I will have to plan this for next year, the window is too tight to find a date that works for all our guys and one the guides have open. However that just gives me time to put aside some money and purchase a few things the guides recommended. This is a going to be a little bit more expensive than I had budgeted, but it should work for next year.

You have to realize that timing your hunt best relies on an outfitter that will call you up just before the flight arrives or has been following the birds up and has or can get access to the areas/fields the birds want to be in. The birds can be through the State(SD) in a few days or a few weeks if you get a weather event (that right now we would prefer to do without). Also, if a strong snowline exists, which it does not this year, they willusually fly just to the west of it. Someyears there are geese in my backyard just nw of Sioux Falls, but it has been a while and you will more likely see flights up the Vermillion River and James River Valleys.
The snows do like a little open or standing water to dabble in and we should have that after this weekend's strong warm up continuing into next week per forecast.
I am not an avid snow hunter, but often go out for a day if I do not have to go too far. Fantastic sights, but I do not have 2000 snow decoys. Took my grandson and friend out a couple of years ago and tho we only took a couple shots they had a lot of fun. The ducks were flying a few feet over our heads and there were thousands of many species.

Thanks Uncle Buck. That is really the primary reason I want to go, the amazing site / spectacle of the migrations. It seems like something that you would read about happening 150 - 200 years ago, before market hunting depleted the populations. I hope to see it next year and get my 8 year old daughter out there to see it sometime in the future as well.
