Snow....could I be so lucky?

I see there's a 60% chance for "significant snow accumulation" across much of SD. I haven't hunted in fresh snow for almost 10 years. Don't get me wrong, I know to "watch what I wish for" and I'll go on record stating I do not wish for 2ft. of snow; 4-6" would be GREAT though:cheers:

3 more days and I'm headed your way SD!

I'm envious.
Ill be there, but east river deer hunting instead. Maybe Ill check out of work early, and fill early enough to justify activatiing a license.

Sat. was great, done by 3 21 birds. Sunday better--done by noon. 4-5 inches where I was at. Don't ask.

Friday was a blue-bird day. A very generous forum member invited my dad and I to hunt with him on his land. My dad and I hunted the best looking habitat we've ever been in. The dogs were finding birds as soon as we got in the grass. They pointed a dozen or so hens before we entered the cattails. Then we experienced a 40-50 bird flush, that yielded 1 rooster in range. We didn't fire on him. We went on to see some more good dog work, then struggled to put up birds in great habitat.

We headed a couple hours down the road and got some good sleep. The next morning it was 19 degrees, snowing, with a STIFF north breeze. While we didn't see the huge flushes I remember seeing before, it seemed we had fairly constant action, most of which was up close and personal. We followed the dogs while they do what they do best. SD provides a lot of bird contacts for the dogs to hone their craft. We were done in the early afternoon each day. Now if I can just get lucky enough to hunt in the first KS snow event of the season:)

I lost track of how many points I saw this w/e:cheers: What a great trip! .

lol......My heart started to pound with that news. You can't beat hunting pheasant with the first sig. snow fall. They tend to stay in the cover longer and sit tighter. Their colors standing out against the fresh snow--that's the good stuff my friends!

Man, I've really got to find a way to get up there this year. This is the first year since '93 I may not go. You folks with your SD reports are not helping matter over here:D

just got back from my first trip to SD, and i'll have to say that i was quite disappointed, though we did hunt nothing but public land. we stayed in mitchell, but on our first day we drove an hour and a half north so that we could get into the snow. we were hunting in about 5 inches of snow. the dogs sure were loving it. we saw a lot of hens and shot the only rooster we say that day, and that was walking a road ditch. now just waiting for the snow in Iowa
