Snake season

The old saying: red on black, good for Jack; red on yellow kill a fellow is good to remember if you are in coral snake country!

I know what it would be, a dead snake :) I hate snakes, I am as afraid of snakes as Jackie Bushmans is, if you ever seen one of the videos of his production team messing with him you would know what I mean.

Bleu,
Anything that wants to come over and eat copperheads and mice is welcome at my place!

The neighbor down the road was hauling his dog to the vet just about an hour ago for a snakebite... Hope everything comes out okay.

I must have good Karma.:D Junie was just losing her mind in the yard when I let her out this morning. You would have thought bandits were raiding our house the way she was barking. So I run out there, expecting the mother of all copperheads... But it was just a box turtle.:D I just moved him out of Junie's line of sight, and peace returned to the property...

Gove County Britts keeps sending me texts of rattlers he has been killing. My new snake boots are on order.

turtle,
I think the ole GCB is fooling you I know he is so scared of snakes that the only way he would kill one is if he ran over it with his truck. Just kidding, I just got off the phone with him, wish I had seen this before I talked to him, I guess he is killing a few.

Copperhead #4 down, and the lucky streak continues! Junie manages to alert us to the presence of the snake and avoid being bitten (knock on wood). What a good little dog!

We had almost a 2 month break from the copperhead troubles by just keeping the dogs blocked in the house after about 7:30 PM each night. But the rain this afternoon must have stirred them up earlier and we heard the old snake bark just about dinner time.:(

 Fortunately we are so used to the routine by now, we had the snake dispatched, disposed of, the dog door locked, and were back in our seats before our dinner got cold. Gotta love rural life.

Ran my dogs through Julian Weslow's snake proof clinic out here in colorado last month. It was pretty cool. I also worked some dogs through it as well. They were rattle snakes, one with the rattle taped and one without.

According to Mr. Weslow, the poisonous snakes put off a different scent than the non-poisonous. Using the e-collar.

Funny thing, there were all kinds of dogs, from a Great Dane, to a schaunzer, poodles, mutts, and even a schitzu....:rolleyes:

went to quail run sporting clays range in Kiowa today and as we were going down the gravel road just prior to the right turn to go to the club house I saw a snake on the left side of the road, I told my friend who was with me, yes I do have 1 friend, look at the snake, he said it must be just a skin of one, about that time I passed it up and it moved, since there was no one behind me I backed up and the snake curled up. yep it was a rattler about 3 feet long, well the ole ford put a hurting on it but I did not kill it as it was heading for the weeds but I ran over him about in the middle.
Than when we were driving down to the range we saw a guy running 2 shorthairs, I stopped and my friend said look he is on point. I told him something is not right he is taking a step back and pointing again, about that time he broke and took a step forward than took off like he wanted to get the heck out of there. We did not talk to the owner of the dog but if I were to guess I would say he probably got the smell of a snake. Don't know for sure.

Who's been rattled at while afield? I got rattled at once in Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, and Nevada.
I literally stepped on a black tip rattler in Arizona three seasons ago! I don't know how I didn't get struck but my heart skipped several beats. We had four other snakes rattle at us that day. Even killed one that was pushing five feet long.

I forgot to mention my dog that got rattled at in Colorado on a Blue Grouse hunt at 7500 feet two seasons ago. I never expected any snakes let alone a rattler up that high.

Tonight I grabbed my trash cans from the driveway to bring them back up to the garage and, surprise! Copperhead #1 for the season. He was a little fella, but still seemed pissed off that I was moving his shelter. We settled the arguement.

I bet if he raised them to sell he may become a rich man.

I had some internet forum hunting friends in Australia in a heavily poison snake area. To protect their home, family and eight Drahthaars, their chain link fence was over a concrete curb that had a sharp piece of metal flashing buried in it. Said the snakes would not cross the sharp metal.

I have not had to deal with copperheads yet, but know if I end up with some land in NE Kansas or Missouri, I will have to.

You need a mongoose.

hahaha! Nice. I wonder what my wife would think if I brought home a mongoose... I imagine they probably eat chickens too, so that could get ugly in a hurry.

I don't want to set a record! It's kinda scary because I had a concrete pad poured out back, plus we had to replace our water line. Anyway, a ton of dirt work took place this Spring and I have huge boulders piled up all along the back fence from it. I want/need to move the boulder pile over to the edge of the property so I'm not creating snake habitat right there by the back fence. "Can't wait" to see what's under all those huge rocks when I start flipping them over to move them.:eek::eek:
