Skunk's & Raccoon's ?

Sounds like anyone who has not been skunked is lucky. Eventually rabies or some other desease will knock them down, but thats another problem.

The Vet in Plankinton told me to shoot all skunks, if possible. according to him, they carry a strain of rabies without showing signs, or exhibiting symptoms of the disease. I badly wanted to shoot the one we encountered, but with it being directly upwind of us, I knew we would end up smelling if I pulled the trigger. Chalk up another advantage of a pointing dog that holds point and doesn't charge in on the animal.

Reddog,
Hunted north of Lyman last Wednesday on some private ground. Very weedy cover. Harvsted one Sharp tail, and my 18 month old GSP got a face full of porcupine quills! Never seen one in my life until then. Not Pretty! I had to pull a dozen or so out of her outer lower jaw. Those didn't seem to bother her too bad. The ones in her mouth and gums were a little more tricky. I watched her closely the rest of the trip. No swelling or eating problems. I think she was very lucky. I have heard horror stories about them getting dogs in the eyes. I hope that teaches her not to lunge in anymore! a valuable learning lesson I hope.

i'm heading to the mitchell area to hunt this next week, you guys got me a little worried about all these skunks. and the weather doen't look like its gonna be cold enough to put em in the ground. suppose i'll bring a clothes pin for my nose and stock up on the peroxoide and baking soda.

Lucygoosey, Their were plenty around the farm we hunted on. Tried to avoid area's that had them whenever possible.

I've seen sand burrs in just about every place I've hunted in SD where the lands been tilled. Some small areas can be really covered with them. I've never put boots on my dog, but try to get him away from them when I see we've wandered into a bad area.

yea, i tried putting boots on my brit and she hops around like she's walking on a hot iron skillet, lol. beings that this is my first time going to SD, i'm just planning on figuring it out as i go. But damn this place really helps a guy out.

i am glad to say that i had neither a run in with skunks or sand burs. I think the cold snap had a little to do with the skunk issue.

I remember when driving up to Rockport, MO from Kansas City It would have taken about three pickups to hold the raccoons we saw on the roadside. I have never seen so many on a single stretch of road.
