Should I Woah Post?

Why not just use a check cord first until the dog is 100% on "whoa", and then move up to the e-collar? Perfect Start/Perfect Finishes way of teaching "whoa" is really easy, and it works.... Don't be afraid of the e-collar, but make sure you teach yourself how to use it before you introduce it to the dog. They are wonderful tools and can make training so much easier, but if used wrong, can make life a nightmare as well. My trainer uses the collar on the flank at all times. Even the fully broke trial dogs. From what Ive seen, it works really well, plus it leaves room for the GPS collar around the dogs neck... "Whoa" posts work fine, but I don't see the need for them.

one of the best if not the best training videos on the market..

there are other uses for a whoa post- just a place that you can snug a dog up to- smart clever dog will catch on pretty quick and not struggle- easy to just say whoa and hand in front of the face- repetition-

no problem- dog learns to stand- you brush out burrs, clip toe nails, etc.
unsnap and say something to release the dog

sometimes such a dog will catch on and go right there and freeze- something to the effect it was good- something to the effect the dog thinks it's showing off-
never hurts to take a picture- always a whoa and hand up when you approach

translate that to the field- works- but I can't see a whoa command from a long distance away- that's like asking for problems

old school guys did as such

the dog needs to understand why he is being stimmed, unfortunately you have to condition him so that thet stimulation comes on, then the woah command, then when he stops the stim comes off. The the next step is command, dog should woah, if he doesnt then stim till the dog stops and shuts off the stim. Better than a post but ONLY if he understands the command first! Sounds like your dog does understand!

Well, I might as well update on this. All of your suggestions are helpful and I have not added any birds yet, except a woah command with another dog pointing to begin to teach honoring, which is going well.

My new problem is that he is woahing 95% of the time, but on that 5% when he doesn't if I stim him he lays down. I don't have the heart to keep stimming while he tries to figure out that woah means STAND there and don't move. I imagine perseverance will do the trick - he knows he will be corrected if he does not woah on command, and we can go from there.

When he lays down I run to him and pick him up, drop him slightly into a standing position and command woah. Seems to generally do the trick. If you can think of a tip I'd love to hear it as always.

It doesn't sound like the dog was introduced to the collar correctly, and you might be using too much stimulation. The dog should barely be able to feel the stimulation. But Ive also seen this with a dog that started off with an invisible fence for containment. The biggest thing is that the dog needs to understand why its getting stimulated. You might want to try putting a half hitch around the dogs flank with a check cord while walking him. Re-train the dog on "whoa" while giving a tug on the check cord, which puts pressure on the dogs flank. Once the dog is 100%, re-introduce the e-collar on the dogs flank. Start off without using the stimulation, then use the stimulation at the same time as the tug, and finally just use stimulation. Often times the stimulation on the flank will lift the dog up instead of them wanting to sit down. Go slowly, and the dog should pick it up pretty quick.

It may sound crazy, but my dog wears her e-collar around the flank, and not on the neck. I get lots of questions about it, but it works.

Keep doing that, but you MUST stim him until he learns that he can turn it off by doing it right. My dog had the same issue, and still does, but rarely, except with her, it was to sit. Very hard to break. Anyway, hold the stim until you walk over and stand him up, then let off. If you repeat it enough, he will learn that he can turn it off by doing it right. The key is, use the absolute lowest stim you can, while still getting results. You may have to turn it up a notch, and then do it....PM me, I think I may be able to help...
