All, looking at giving shed hunting a whirl to keep us afield and any comments/advice would be appreciated. When do the antlers typically drop, do they actually have scent or is it by sight. This should give me a good excuse to get outside... not now though -9 below yesterday evening.

I am training my GSP to shed hunt, get yourself some shed antlers, some dokken rack wax and make a game out of it.
biggest thing I found was you need to make your dog really love the shed antler, introduce it to your dog right and he or she will love any antler it finds and want to pick it up.
when I started I took the first few days and just played fetch with an antler, than went to hiding the antlers.
keep the antler covered in the rack wax and your dog will learn the scent really quick.

good luck!!! keep us informed on how it goes.

My untrained Lab came home with a 4 pointer yesterday morning. Hadn't thought about training for it, though I know others do. If I could have him retrieve firewood regularly I would be happy!

Shed hunting is a perfect hobby for an outdoorman. So many things in nature to observe.
Dogs have no trouble picking up the scent of a shed or skull.
Off season fun and exercise.

These are from sept 2012- May 2013. Lots of miles to find these though.
Montana and some ND and some MN.
One seasons finds.

Nice pile of bones...you gotta love it when you are able to find a matched set of elk antlers. Just one thing we have to watch out for around here is the amount of snow that is on the ground. Don't want to go into an area where the deer are at and push em out of there...it's going to be a hard winter/spring on them this year.

Blue tongue is not a problem in MN.
Grey Wolves are.

The WT skulls found in MT and Western ND are likely Blue tongue.
I've come across hundreds of skulls and carcasses of does and fawns.

I do very little shed hunting while there's snow on the ground.
Best time is Late March and April. Best is to take As they Lay "ATL" pics. I have LOTS! if anyones interested?
Early April on the Native Short Grass Montana. Muleys and Upland birds.

Same trip different area. Still native public land.:)

I am just getting my GSPs started in Shed hunting. It started about 2 months ago when my pup brought back an antlered skull. Now they love it. Just need them to hang onto it long enough to get it back to me.
