We got a guy who farms owns huge 300000 dollar tractors and all other equipment is new and he gets food stamps:mad: The only propelm with gov't is it never enforces anything:mad: Heres an idea work= $=food for family. not sit on butt=gov't food stamps. I'd die of hunger before I use food stamps. I know I'm a dinosuar in my thinking but have some pride america.

It doesn't sound like it is going anywhere's too fast......

"The House Agriculture Committee delayed consideration of its version until after Congress returns from its recess July 11. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., ordered a slowdown to assess the political ramifications. The House Republican majority includes several lawmakers from rural states whose championship of farm subsidies has often trumped their claims of fiscal austerity."

All of you that decry the food stamp program should wise up to realities of a farm program you thing is misguided. For the logic to work, the excesses in the farm commodity marketed TO the food stamp program, and the 82 ear old down the street, who get 8# blocks of American Cheese. The money GOES to the farmer, and sustains our ability to have producers to supply the goods we have that are the envy of the world. It takes both sides of the equation. Besides it chaps my hide that any american kid, goes home hungry, or sick, if we can't solve that, we should take a step back.

I'm confused. Is the food stamp amount of nearly $969 billion to go directly towards food stamps or other programs? I'm not sure if I'm reading your post correctly O&N. My apologizes if I'm not.

Anyway, I believe nearly 47 million people on food stamps in the U.S. today (I could be off).

Someone please double check my math here. There's too many zeros to work with. lol

But if we divide $969 billion by 47 million people who are on food stamps we come up with a number somewhere around $20,000:confused: in food stamps per person (using food stamp). That's very high.

If that's the case, this is nothing more than a game of politics. One side able to cry out "we care for poor children and the elderly, while you who voted against this bill do obviously do not".

Yes it's a game of politics. There House is unwilling to do anything that might help the Democrats get elected. In both parties they are pre-occupied with their own agendas, irreguardless of it's effect on the rest of us. As far as the 969 billion dollar program, that is a projected total, that total has lump-in, disaster aid, aid to old and infirm, school lunches, (thats a big sum). That also the TOTAL of the programs term, not just a year. You know I am all for slimming down the budget, so if farm subsidy is the way to go, get it done. No Bison burger subsidy, ( Ted Turner will half to eat his own), No wool subsidy, (Sam Donaldson will have to make it on his own), no CRP, birds will have to adapt, no milk subsidy, somebody will have to accept what the market will bear, no grain subsidies, farmers were real happy with $1.30 corn, 5 years ago, no foreign sales, because we subsidize those with no interest government loans, some of which are paid back eventually by ridiculous currency valuations we allow on the world market. Other times we loose sales to foreign commodities, like Argentine wheat, Brazilian soybeans, all using american subsidized and made farm machinery and technology. Don't forget the giant subsidy of taxpayers dollars to land grant universities given forward to give private corporations research and patent seeds, and chemicals. Wash it all away. In the clear light, with all the divergents come together and we see the destruction to us all, personally, that would be, the school kids, the downtrodden, the subsistence food to old people, you and me at grocery store, Ted and Sam even, and the farmers we tried to smooth the road for along the way, which provides a long term security of our very food supply, we will long for the old days. To many gears to just stop the process, with out a train wreck. When we pick apart what we believe is the sore point, we expose vast web of underlying problems, which were biding there time below the surface. We invaded Syrian to save the free world. Now we can't get out, if we do, will not like it any better than before. We can't destroy the system, one of the first likely candidates is the CRP program. We got enough trouble now.

Chris, I think your right. Being an election year doesn't help matters either. Each side has to make a point to it's voter block.

O&N, thank you for going into detail with your last post. As always, I look forward to what you have to say.

I agree, we're in it too deep to make extreme changes at this point. But I'll tell you, bills near the trillion dollar mark are scary. Some day, some how, it needs to be paid for. How:confused: This is frustrating and worrisome to me.

Of course (as you mentioned) to make cuts will require cuts to our Conservation programs. Obviously this too is a scary proposition. One I don't want to encounter. Though despite CRP funding made available to land owners (with grain prices where they are) there may not be much of a demand for CRP anyway.

And here sometimes in the store, you will see somebody buying a pack of mentos with a $100.00 food stamp and getting the change to go spend as they please!!!!!!!!!! It is out of control now! It has gone from being not cool to be on food stamps to now being cool! Pray hard people! My $0.02. There is too much we expect the government to do for us and too little individual responsibility.

I am not sure what degree of hypocrite this makes me but I have strong beliefs against government subsidies. Yet I tell myself that CRP is acceptable as a preventative against another dust bowl, all the while knowing that I am really supporting it because it might increase acres available to me and my dogs. I do not wish to start an argument or participate in any form of "whizzing contest" on this forum but I for one vehemently disagree with the use of taxpayer moneys to subsidize private endeavors. I see no justification for the government support wind, solar, ethanol, coal, oil, natural gas or nuclear energy and I see no justification for regulating any of these industries out of existence. I don't think the science supports either position. But being at least a partial, two-faced hypocrite I would like to see more funding for CRP. Is my bird hunting more important than feeding starving people? Absolutely not but it is more important than some career politician using the food stamp program to buy votes and handing out loans and subsidies to his give his supporters an unfair advantage. I love this nation but our government has done a lousy job managing money.

I don't think many will disagree with your statement above DGT.;)

As far as hypocrisy is concerned, I hear what your saying loud and clear. Though regarding CRP, in the long run it generates revenue/taxes. It's smart. It saves $ and has countless other benefits you already know about. I wish there was another way to improve and increase habitat, but unfortunately I don't believe there is.
