Our season starts Saturday and we are packing the truck to leave tomorrow morning. Me and my brother have 2 weeks straight off and we plan to hunt as much as us and the dogs can handle. We have no set plans except hunting riceland up north and hunting south back home. Wish us luck and I'll try and post daily updates on our success or lack there of. Good luck to all of you on your outings.

opening day

JP and I with our groups limit. In the picture I am holding the only wild bird of the day. We hoped for more natives, but with 500 birds released on 10,000 acres it still took almost all day. I'll try to get some action shots tomorrow.

JP have his best performance yet with 9 flushes and 8 retrieves. Daisy has a long way to but she did get one flush in today.

Sounds like you had a great time. Congrats, I hope you get a few more this season.....Bob

day two

Not quite as good today but we did manage to get two birds, 1 wild and 1 plant. We did find where the native birds are hiding. Right at sundown we flushed 3 hens and 2 roosters flushed wild on us. Judging by there behavior all 5 birds were wild. We will get after them tomorrow. Here's JP and daisy with our wild rooster.

Here is JP working hard for me.

JP also made a great water retrieve on the other bird but I was unable to get the pic.:(

Quailhound,

Great job. Good thing you guys went north. mendota only shot 5 roosters on sat. There is usually 40 to 80 on a slow year and over 100 use to be shot there 10 years ago on opener. Keep us posted and good luck on the wild birds, the others always are good training birds for the dogs anyways.
Springerchaser.

We had a great morning today although we didn't bag any birds we flushed 5 hens and 3 roosters in a little over an hour (thats a lot in Ca). One rooster offered my dad a good shot that he missed clean and the other 2 flushed out of range. We came back to camp for lunch and a quick nap but we will head back out shortly. Here is a picture of a rice stubble field being burned.

Hopefully I'll have a pic of some more roosters tonight.

4 hours hunting this morning produced one wild rooster, they're out here we just have to wear out some boot leather to get them. A pic of my brother with his bird.

After 4 days dogs and hunters are beat, we may take the rest of the day off.

2 more birds this morning, both wild, and 2 more flushed out of range.

Finally a shot of a retrieve.

I know, poor camera work. I'll try harder next time.

Way to go Quailhound! Good pictures.

I love the fact that you're out there hunting your butt off for them wild birds. They are worth every bit of effort, aren't they?

Yes sir, they are worth every mile logged for them. The sense of accomplishment knowing that you and the dog worked in harmony for that bird is awesome.

Way to go Qh, Great pics. That field fire looks pretty scary:eek: Was that a planned Burn?

Yeah the farmers can burn 25% of their rice straw each year. It's a lot cheaper than flooding it to decompose the straw.

We got back after it yesterday and ended up with 2 planters, 1 wild rooster, and one quail. Today we got our limits, 4 plants and 2 wild birds, plus 2 quail as a bonus. We could have got a few more quail, but we only had 2 7.5s each on us. My brother yesterday.

Today was my last day off, but we ended up hunting 13 days our of the 18. We had a blast, we ended up with limits 3 days running last week (2 guys 6 birds), and 4 birds, including 3 wild birds on thanksgiving morning. All in all we shot 32 birds over JP and 5 over Daisy dog. We ended up today with 2 more wild birds off public land today. Here are a few wrap up pictures.
