SD in December

Returned home early this morning from a hunt in SD. Thought I would share a little of the trip. We ended up with eight guys on wed, and ten on thursday and friday. Kinda like herding cats keeping all those guys on the same page. Several of these guys I took bird hunting for their first time, so we get together every december for a hunt.

1. Started the hunt on wednesday about twenty five with about five inches of snow. Hunted some shelter belts and couple of draws. We had an eight man limit by about five pm. Birds were wild but many burrowed deep in the snow. Dogs earned their keep. Worked one tree belt that had five or six hundred birds in it.

2. Day two found us working some different areas and managed a ten man limit by four thirty or so. It was real foggy all day. We hit one scrub draw about a quarter mile long. We had seen a few birds and decided to work it. What I saw next I really couldn't believe. The sky blackened as fifteen hundred plus birds took off in several waves of three to four hundred. Some thought it to be over two thousand birds. I had to look twice to make sure they were pheasants! Pretty incredible to see. We managed a couple dumb ones out of the group.

3. Day three found everyone with some shooting issues so we came up a little short, but still a great day. My dog had fun retrieving a rooster in some cattails. I shot one which I thought he had pinned in some heavy tails. I was headed over to help him out as the bird busted out and tried to fly. We messed around with that bird for ten minutes as the dog found, lost and found that bird. He finally pinned it and rooted it out two feet below some laid over tails. Fun stuff!

JonnyB and his friend captain Kirk hunted with us all three days. Hats off to Jonny. At 74 he is still a hardcore hunter and I really enjoyed our hunt. Good shot too with that contraption he shoots:D You would kinda have to see it to believe it. Was able to get another first timer on some birds so that was good. One of the pictures below is my dog with the last bird of the day on thursday. Nice flush on a huge rooster, with retrieve through three foot snow drifts and heavy cattails. I had put my gun away for the day and was just having fun working the dog for others to get some shots. He had a blast also. Hope everyone has a good christmas.

Black dogs look awesome in the snow!
I to spent a few days after the first real snow in SD. Just me and my dogs having a blast.

Dang, man, that IS a big bird! Did you happen to measure a tailfeather off that guy?

And that pic of the tailgate... well, it feels like eons since I've seen something like that firsthand...:( Good job, man. Sounds like it was a really fun trip.

Looks like you all had a great hunt - heckuva lot better than I had in NW KS where, after .60" rain washed the dust off the cover an moistened things up, the birds were as rare as before. Thinkin' 'bout a Dakota trip now.

Yea Toad it measured just short of 27 3/4's. I didnt shoot it, one of the newbies did. It was only his second hunt, his first one being last year at 43 years old! Pretty cool. I was done hunting for the day, and had put my gun up and was working the dog for him in a big CRP triangle. Buddy put one up for him which he whiffed on twice. Couple minutes later put this monster up which he nailed. Bird landed in a big snow drift and he made a nice retrieve. Then he posed for a couple of pictures. We also shot a couple of nearly golden pheasants which were cool but the pictures didn't come out. If you liked the tailgate one, day one, you might like the day two pic. Also have another pic of the big one that didn't get away. That thing probably weighed 4 lbs.

Just curious, public or private land? Don't have to answer if you don't want to.

I don't mind. It was private. We paid a trespass fee. Some on here have a hard-on for that. I could really care less. We hunted hard everyday. There were several fields we saw very little. Some fields we saw hundreds.

I assume "newbies" doesn't refer to the "old guys" that held their own the three day's! Both old guys - 74 and 66? managed to shoot a few; we noticed the younger set had problems "keeping up" , complained about being tired and had problems keeping up...

Jon,
I have ultimate amount of respect for you as a hunter. I can only hope to be as able at 74 as you are. As far as shooting a few, most " old guys" I know are pretty good shots. I am still pretty streaky. Some days I shoot like a champion, other days like a chump.

Tom,

Was just kidding you a bit; thanks for the uplifting remarks...turning 75 Jan.8 and hope I have many more hunts with these legs. We appreciated your "patient guiding" during our hunt; sheparding nine hunters can be a full-time job!
