Ryman Setter Size

Hey guys. I had an almost 4 month old Ryman setter. He is 21 pounds which I feel is on the light side. This is my first bird dog. I have 2 other dogs. One Bernese Mountain Dog and a Bernedoodle so I’m used to giant dogs. I just feel like he isn’t growing much. What are you guys feeding and how much? Thanks so much

I was having the same issue with my young Chessie. I researched foods with higher fat content and settled on Innukshuk Marine. It made a big difference, especially during the season when we were hunting a bunch. Good luck!

PPP. Follow feeding instructions on bag. I just checked my feeding amounts for the off season. In my case it doesn’t seem like much food but I wanna keep them lean. It can be easy to get willy nilly when scooping food

I second Innukshuk, the nutrient concentrate has really helped with my picky eater. They both love the taste too. I use the 30/25 mix but will probably switch to 25/16 for this offseason.

I feed my Lab Inukshuk 26/16 and he likes it. I am trying to drop weight from him right now.

Forget dog foods. Let's get back to Setter513's real question. Is 21 lbs about right for a 4 month old Ryman Setter? I think you are better asking the breeder. How large are the parents? Nothing wrong with having a dog a little smaller than the norm. What are you currently feeding the dog. If it's a quality food and he's eating okay and in good condition I wouldn't worry about it. Hunting dogs should be lean.

I think your dog is right on track. The dog should closely resemble the parents. I have a line bred ryman female. Weighs approximately 53 lbs during hunting season.

Thank you. Mom is about 55pounds and dad was around 60. I just wasn’t sure how quick they grow

Low end male=55lb
Low end female=45lb
Dog is 1/6ish of the way to full maturity.
About 1/2 the weight of a full grown smallish bitch by breed standards if I researched that well.
I’m with rangerman. You’re probably feeding all it can eat, If its worm free and otherwise healthy, I wouldn’t worry over it.
I have a small GSP that turned 3 a few months ago and put on a little growth spurt during hunting season…but she’s still about 8 pounds under “typical” GSP females…
Suits me fine by the way!
Since you asked…. My dogs all do well on PPP sport dog once a day and I adjust up or down based on appearance/performance. They also get 1/4 can of quality cat food on top to make em clean it up fast so I don’t have any dog fights. They get “treats” all day just because…. Maybe some chicken jerky strips …
They can get fat quick on the PPP sportdog so there’s plenty of protein and fat to get them along. Puppies need some extras so I start them with PPP for puppies for about a year or so.
Hope this helps

Attached are 4 photos of my ryman/hemlock setters purchased from Mike & Peggy wyss, fireside setters of new Lisbon, Wisconsin.

The black/white female weighs 52 lbs and the orange/white weighs 60 lbs. Both dogs point with a straight tail level with their back. Typical range for the female is 50 to 75 yards and 75 to100 yards for the male.

Both dogs are very bidable and very easy to train. They don't require much pressure and easily corrected with low stimulation on the tritronics scale, usually a 2 low.
