I've heard them sound off when train cars start bumping together too or when they hook up to one and other. If there are any around usually they will sound off to almost any loud and sudden noise. It's a pretty neat thing to hear.
Just a couple days ago I fired up chainsaw beside the house & a rooster started cackling like crazy. Saw him take off through the trees about 20 yards from me. Pretty neat.
