Pheasant season is coming up soon! This off season I put a senior hunter title on my go to guy and a couple junior hunter passes on my young up and coming dog, both labs. Monday we are hitting the preserve for a warm up/refresher on some birds. With the first 12 days of season off I hope to really hit it hard. 5 dayd planned in south east SD and the rest here in MN. What is everyone else up to? Any big off season accomplishments or big plans this season?

Coming up on my dogs 3rd season. I'm looking forward to seeing how well he does this year. He really seemed to 'get it' the middle of last season. It should be a good one.

No trips planned but I'm already in SD. :p I might head out farther west once to try for a grouse. I'm also hoping that after a couple mild winters I can luck into a covey of the rare wild Bobwhites here in SD. It's been a while since I've even tried for them. I have a couple secret spots up my sleeve.

We'll be making our first trip to SD the last week of October, I like roadscholar, have been counting down the days. Last Thanksgiving, after a morning of quail hunting in SC, I read a post of a fella that just came back from S.D. I shared the story with my brother-in-law and we immediately went to work on a trip for this year. I've been anticipating this trip, no, obsessing (according to my bride) ever since. Unfortunately two things are filtering in to put a damper on the trip. 1st my GSP had to go through emergency surgery last week, Doc says two weeks of rest before we can slowly work her back into condition, he says she should be good to go, as long as Murphy doesn't show up. 2nd the ladies decided to turn this into a sight seeing field trip. What went from a week of a couple of guys and dogs making a good ole redneck hunting trip, to a multi family sight seeing tour, with a couple of days of hunting.
Some of you already read my version of whining on a couple of other posts. and I apoligize, but I'm hoping someone will feel sorry for me and offer up a semi-sweet hot spot :D

Heading west on Wednesday for a wild chukar hunt and some trout fishing. Nothing better than a cast and blast.

My dad's first trip to pheasant hunt with me here in MT over the opening week is now up in the air. I'm still hoping to do three four day hunts in Northeast Montana, one with my dad, one with my family, and one with a buddy. If dad doesn't make it, I may do one alone. I'll get in several day hunts in between but those are more likely to yield sharpies and huns.

I've not been fortunate enough to kill an elk with my bow yet, so along with cow tags for the rest of the family, I need to kill a bull in there somewere.

Good luck out there. There were some fires around Izzenhood Range but I'm sure you're aware. Share some stories and pics when you get back.

Upcoming plans

Going with group this Thursday for game farm shoot, this will be a good tune up for dogs, can only do so much field training and water work. Then its the MN opener, hunting in western MN on the in-laws land, we will see how that turns out based on reports. Following week,:cheers: off to S.D for first trip of season, again, curious to see how that turns out based on reports. But lets be honest, does it matter # of birds in the bag or just the thrill of the hunt!!!!!

In about three weeks my brother and I will be in the truck heading north to SD. As old as I am, I must admit that the anticipation of these yearly outings seems even greater than my waiting for Christmas as an eight year old.

Ours opens in 11 days, we have a 2wk trip planned on the 26th. Hopefully Stan's stiches hold and he's ready to go by then! I've been counting down the days for months now, lol.

Headed to SD for a guided hunt Oct 23 - 25, and then 2 more days of self-guided hunting on public land. Just did a hunt at my club Oct. 1st. Shot 4 of 5 birds. I'm ready!

The day you fail to have anticipation on a bird hunting trip is the day that your fire has went out, you are done for, finished. Heading to Iowa at the end of the month with a great bunch of guys and even better dogs. I have been packed for over a month, repacked, ammo checked for the umptenth time, checking my repack, going over my pack list like IRS accountant.
