Rifle Deer Hunt!

The rifle hunt starts tomorrow and I saw a bunch of bucks still chasing does today (not on the property I hunt, but was still a good sign)!

Good luck to all, lets hope big bucks are easier to find this year than roosters!!

If anyone gets lucky and gets a big one, I do european mounts for a fraction of the price of a shoulder mount (just a hobby, not a taxidermist) and I would be happy to do some for forum members.

Didn't have Time to archery this year so Im gonna try to harvest a doe and a buck with the good old classic 243, and maybe walk a couple draws where I've been flushing birds out of too

Many in my area are busted up, missing one side or have really abnormal racks. A mature typical is hard to find.

On the way to work yesterday, saw a big 10 150 class about 200 yds away from where my son hunts from.To bad he can't get in there until Thursday.Although, deer like that don't come out to often.

I am sorry to say I have to work till friday:mad: My buddy is hunting my farm and he shot a Doe this morning. I am hunting this guy.

My brother and I have Mulie permits. Cant hunt until this Saturday, but we will be out west from Friday night after work until the following Sunday. Took all of next week off. In my past experiences all the road hunters are out the first weekend so the only places we will be hitting this Sat and Sun are where there are no road access.

I spoke to some landowners that also stated they should let us on their property after opening weekend to fill our permits and should we see a nice WT buck and not have our any deer tag filled maybe we'll pull the trigger.

Just hoping we stay in good health all week, no truck problems and the asshole that was going to shoot at us/a buck in front of us/ last year from the road (we were about 50 yards from the mulie herd in direct line of fire in some CRP and had taken a couple hours to get that close.) stays home. The icing on that cake is about 10 mins later we took the nice mulie the ding dong was going to shoot at and he drove by again on the road so that we could display the trophy for his lazy butt. I absolutely hate those people. Im not too picky on how you take a deer if its for the meat (ie a doe or a yearling buck) however if you're going to shoot a nice wall hanger I dont understand how you could feel good about taking the animal if you shoot it from the pickup or run it for 5 miles. That being said I just dont see the fun in shooting any deer from the truck. Id rather spot and stalk and see how close we can get.

We had no luck finding a ranch to mulie hunt this year that has limited road access so we could avoid that problem again. But I will keep trying for next year. Did possibly get permission on White Tail heaven...thats the one where the landowner said to stop by on Mon or Tuesday. I'll make sure to give him a nice bottle of bourbon, some gourmet coffee and some candy from the Nifty Nut house in Wichita.

Cant wait. Excited to go on a nature hike Saturday.

Anyways good luck to all. Hopefully my brother or I get a nice 5x5 or 6x6.

I understand what you are saying, but I think we owe it to wild game to give them a fair chance regardless of whether or not they are considered to be "trophy" animals. A doe or a yearling buck deserves our respect and honor just as much as a wallhanger rack. Folks should have a mindset to be shooting ALL deer for the meat first, and any antlers are just icing on the cake.

I'm not calling you out, because you obviously are an ethical hunter. But I think it is fair to expect others to show some respect to wild game as well. Finding efficiency is great in our day-to-day chores, but in hunting the hard way is the right way.

oldest son tagged first doe of the season this a.m. Boy,where those backstrap butterflied steaks tender!!

I am chomping at the bit to get out there tomorrow with my son! He is more excited to eat donuts and drink chocolate milk in the blind, but at least he excited.:)

Good luck to every this weekend.

Yeah, between the heat and the full moon, I better buy a whole dozen donuts!

lmao
:D
good luck tomorrow, both my boys will be on their own,got to work all weekend, which really sucks. The first weekend is really crazy down here, guys driving around mile sections, waiting for something to move.Hopefully, where they are going to be,right in the middle of a section, they might have a chance to see some deer being push towards them.Earlier in the year we saw a big 10 in this wheat field, hope he stays out a little late in the morning, before going back into the thick stuff to bed down, the moon sure is hurting things right now.

Well, the donuts and chocolate milk were good.:)

We saw one buck run by, I think someone else spooked him, but no chance for a shot. Oh well, I got to hang out in the blind with my boy, that is better than any buck!

My boys got busted, while walking in,4 does in the field, snorted and ran around the whole field. They stuck it out until 9 ish,but when it was 65 degress and the wind shifted on them,it was time to go home.Going to wait until tomorrow to try again.

The boys decided we needed to take advantage of the warm weather and go fishing one last time, we will try the deer again next weekend!

Good luck,

Rut

Went bird hunting last Thurs-Sat and saw a few real nice bucks. I really large mullie that was a real throphy. No birds in the bag, only hens were pointed.

Treaspassers

Well we got to the farm Saturday morning and I was set up when I look down my private road to see a truck driving onto my farm. Not only did they drive on private property but they had to nerve to say "I thought it was public" after they drove past my truck and the "NO TREASPASSING" sign clear past me in the deerbox too. I yelled at them and and was beginning to call the law when they hustled off the property. I did manager a couple of pics on my trail cam which I am trying to load for your enjoyment. I also installed a gate that has a no treaspassing sign hanging on it by 10am. I called the game warden for Jefferson county and gave him the details. He is now patrolling it. This weekend I will install the big gate with a lock and a trail/ video camera with video remote uplink. I should have expected it being close to public ground. BTW....Saw no deer in 3 sits and that may be why.

I sat Friday evening with my younger son (12). We spooked a couple of does off the field walking in. For the last half hour or so there were deer on the field. Nine in total, 7 were does or yearlings, 2 small bucks. All of them were on the far side of the field. I want his first shot to be as close to a gimme as possible, so no shots were fired.

We'll try again Saturday.

You mean to tell us you didn't break the bank to buy that place, bust your butt to put in food plots, and spend your time studying the habits of your deer, just so you could share the place with road hunters?

FWIW, I have been out at my place 3 times also and haven't seen anything. So it could just be due to the weather. I hope you get your poacher problem under control. Easily accessible land so close to public hunting will always be a prime target for the lazy poacher. But it sounds like you have a plan.

Just this morning a friend posted on FB that she and her husband chased off a poacher who had just shot a trophy deer on their land in a field full of calves. It was a 155" 10 point.

Good luck Matto. I hope your son gets a good shot this season!

I don't understand people. It is not that hard to go out and find a deer on WIHA or public land. I have taken two each of the last four years, all off of WIHA. It think it is normally to hot to hang a deer during the buck season, so unless I see one that I really want, I wait until the doe season when it is cooler.

I hunt deer for the meat, and to a lesser extent the challenge. Shooting a doe after a good stalk is more meaningful to me then shooting a huge buck while sitting in a truck. Are people really getting that lazy?
