I'll have to post some pictures when Im at home but still deer hunting till the end of the week out west. I hate road hunters and for that reason this weekend my brother and I found the biggest WIHA we could find that had EXTREMELY limited road access. Saturday we got there at appx 6:45am, walked appx 15-17 miles total for the day and my brother ended up with a nice 5x5 mulie. Not a world record but a very nice deer and probably bigger than most have gotten. He was probably only 3-4 yrs old so when my buddy gets home from his SD job hes gonna buy a muzzleloader any deer permit and we'll likely head over there again. We found a herd with a very nice 6x6 but it had too many jumpy does and we couldnt get too close to them. Saw quite a few deer though for us being on foot and doing all of our scouting using Google Earth.
Got mine on Sunday. The locale and story behind it arent as fun as my brothers, but a friend saw the buck bed down in a stubble field, told us in person that he saw it 3 hours before, so for the heck of it went to check it out. Sure enough he was laying in a wheat stubble field that had been cut with a stripper header. His antlers were the only things sticking up so he felt pretty safe. Got out, walked to within appx 30 yards of him, (dont know if he was sleeping or what, he had some does with him in the morning we were told and judging by the lack of hair on his thighs hed been breeding all night, but they literally left him for dead)
But once we got within about 30 yards he stood up and looked at us, took a stretch and by then I made the decision to take him. The drag was a whopping 10 yards to the trail road. A much needed break compared to the 2 mile deer cart ride my brothers deer took...ha This deer lived near a feedyard so he was fat and happy.
All the white tails are running like crazy. We cant seem to find any does that aren't running 30 mph.
So far happy with deer season. Still waiting for the day I have another chance at a 180" mulie. Maybe next year or maybe we'll get my buddy on one Thursday.
