My son will be coming home from the middle east in the fall and all he talks about is going hunting in South Dakota when he gets home. We live in Washington. He had a buddy that was lost that grew up in S.D. and they were going to go there when they got back. He wants to go hunt there to honor his friend. I can not aford to take him to the "dude ranches". Can anyone give me advise as to where a Dad might take his son in S.D. to hunt that does not cost so darn much to pull the trigger. We hunt in the eastern part of our state but lately the dang lawyers and bankers have leased all of the land we once hunted by knocking on a farmers door.

From one soldier to another...

Tell him that I said Welcome Home! There is a guy that goes by the name: Dakotazeb look him up he lives in SD. He is really nice he helped me out. Good luck finding a spot to that HERO hunting...

I also think a guy by the Name of Uguide could be of some help here. Chris is a guide and along with Zeb, they should be able to come up with something. Brooksy look around the board you will see various posts by UGUIDE and all his contact info is right there.........Bob

Tell your son thank you first of all. Also, depending on the area you were looking to go, Birdman650 something would be able to help as well. He is a law enforcement officer in SD.

I got so tied up giving you the information, I had a senior moment and forgot to Welcome You and your Son to UPH. So Welcome to UPH. I do enjoy seeing you here. I live in Eastern Washington, always nice to have a fellow statesman on here.............Bob

Bob-

Thank you for the reply. I must be honest with you I am not that good with this computer stuff and in reading your reply you said that you might have some information for us, if you did I am not finding where it might be. Tyler and I that is my son, hunted around Warded and Mosses lake as well as Royal, since he has been gone its just not the same. I can not wait to take to the field with him. I have a few monthes, I am counting the days until he gets back, to do reasearch on taking him hunting in S.D.. Any information on making this trip would be appreciated.

Thank you Jeff Brookes:

First off welcome to the site!!

I sent you a PM.. however im not sure what youre looking for in for example, how many people and when.. I got some reserves already from memebers on this site as well.

Dont get me wrong, it would be great to have a Honor for fallen military hunt.... I just gotta make sure its fair for everyone as well. UGUIDE isnt that far from my county as well and there is lots of Hunt ground in and out of Gregory County.

Im in Tripp and i believe UGUIDE is in Charles Mix County.

THere is a guy I know in Presho that runs a hunt too so if i cant get your schedule fit in, i could call him and get you lined up with him as well. there are TONS of lodges/hunt areas in south dakota. mainly in the central and South Central part of SD.

Dakotazeb may have a few people he knows that have hunt grounds. looking forward to see what you got in mind and see if i can fit you in!

Jeff, Welcome to UPH. Praying for your son's safe return.

I'd be glad to try and help you if you decide to come to SD for a hunt this fall. We've had a tough winter and everyone is anxious to see how the birds have done. I feel we are going to see a reduction in birds this year. Some areas more than others. The state does a road count survey in August and that will tell more of the story. I hear ya on the availability of private land to hunt. It's getting tough out here too.

Do you have a dog? If so, what kind? If you don't have a good dog it could be a real challenge finding birds but maybe myself and some others here in SD will be able to meet up with you for a few days and provide the dogs.

Stay in touch and we'll do everything we can to help make your SD hunt a successful and enjoyable one.

As a Vet, please thank Tyler for his service for me.

I will ask this of Uguide and others on this site from SD. Is there some kind of program that we could put together to help these returning vets that want to come to SD to hunt? Could we get some of the "Pay to Hunt" places to donate some land for these guys? Or at least offer a substantially reduced price. Without these vets, and others like myself that have served in the military to protect this country, we wouldn't even be talking about hunting pheasants.

Just a thought. Anyone else want to jump in?

First and foremost, Thank you, thank you, thank you to your brave son. Can't think of a better way to pay tribute to a fallen hero. You are on the right track with the boys up in S.D. They can sure help you with your trip.Been up there 4 times and have had a lifetime of memories each trip. Good luck and welcome to the site. Please keep us all posted on your travels. Thanks, Chad:thumbsup:

Hunt for son

I want to thank every one for your information. I do not want anyone to go out of there way. We just need to get pointed in the right direction and with gunner hes our black lab tat has a good nose and is birdy as all get out we will be fine. I have been doing reasearch on the walk in hunting areas open to the public and it looks lik,e there is plenty of room to kick up some birds. I will be asking you all for some advise about what town would be best to stay in to take advantage of these public lands and such. Just walking next to my boy chasing the dog will be great, putting some birds up for a shot will just be icing on the cake.

Thanks Jeff Brookes

Brooksy I would like to offer my thanks to your son for his duty to his/our country. I have three sons all in the military 1 marine 2 air force. Two of the three have been over seas. Nothing made me happier then the day they came home. I aslo took all three on a bird hunt close to my son in North Dakota. What a great way to spend time.

Thank your son from me and my three vets.

1st off.....Thank your son for his service and decidation to our country.

2ndly.....Welcome to the site, I'm sure that you will get all the information that you need and then some....

I would be willing to help depending on my always screwed up schedule. If coming from the east thru Sioux Falls I can always do a quick afetrnoon hunt locally--my treat.

A Closer, Maybe Cheaper, Place to Hunt

Try SW North Dakota, which is alot closer to you. Pheasant hunting in ND is not the commerical enterprise it is in SD. That part of ND has excellent pheasant hunting. Try Allen Anderson in Scranton who might be able to set you up for a moderate price.

Thank you for your reply, knowing my son I think that he will be set on goiing to SD as a pledge to honor his comrad. I have recently sent him a letter telling him that I am a little discouraged at how comercial the huntimg prospects in SD seem to be. This fellow Allen Anderson is he on this forum or just some one you know up in that part of the country

Jeff, don't get discouraged on hunting in SD. Yes, commercial hunting has turned into big business for some but I don't think it's as bad as you may have been led to believe. How about the family of your son's buddy. Do they own any land or can they help you out with some hunting land? I think there are enough of us SD boys on this site that we can steer you in the right direction. What part of SD was your son's friend from?

I would like to say thanks also to your son and welcome.
2nd I would like to say WOW I can't believe how many of you jumped up to offer a hunt and or help so fast. I think that is just the best thing ever.
