Rattle snake venom?

Ive spoke with a couple of folks lately who have had their dogs vaccinated for rattler bites and I am thinking of having it done to my German wirehair pointer and large Munsterlander. Curious if any one has had it done and if there have been any side effects to your dogs?

Two of mine are vaccinated for it and neither had any reaction. It's not a cure though, if your dog gets bit its still a trip to get anti venom but but my vet said it gives you more time and dogs vaccinated need only half as much anti venom as dogs not vacc. It's a bit of piece of mind but still I think snake breaking is a better choice I'd you can do it.

i vaccinated two of mine this year. i did premedicate with 100 mgs of diphenhydramine, and neither had any reaction what so ever.

not all vaccinated dogs that are bitten will require antivenom. that said, it is still a medical emergency and they need to get to the vet asap.

After my black lab female got bit as a pup, I get both dogs the snake shots every year. It's the best $28 investment ever made.

Regarding antivenin, the vet that treated my dog didn't use any. He had treated MANY snakebit dogs and his treatment is an iv in the leg, and lots of fluids to flush out the dogs system of the poison. He said the antivenin was very expensive, highly alergic to many dogs, and didn't work that well.

Did your dog get bit in SD?

Took my two hounds in today for the vaccination, have to have a booster in a month and then again each year, the vet, who is a hunter himself by the way, which is always a good thing, thought it was a good idea. Just gives a guy a bit of piece of mind out working the dogs. My wife is a physician up here in NE Montana and it seems like every year, she hears of a couple of folks getting bit, so I am sure my dogs are more likely to have a run in then me or most folks...LOL

Rosco was bit on a weekend 1300 bucks no vaccine anti-venom needed,. Dusty bit with vaccine , 120 bucks, no antivenom needed, just some fluid.

I'm heading in today with Gus to get him vaccinated. I wish I could get vaccinated as I can't hear worth a hill o beans. I have a friend that does the avoidance classes but he is a full days drive+ from where I live. I hear that the avoidance class will help the hunter stay away from the snake as well because the dog will not venture to that particular area. Maybe I should just buy a pig to go with us when we hunt. hahahahaha

No reaction to shot. Gus doing good & I am at ease.

I took Jane, Abby, Morgan and Gibby for their shots earlier this year. They required a booster in one month and we will do it again next year. Two of the girls had a little reaction at the injection site. It swelled and they had a large "lump" under the skin at the injection site. The vet said this was normal and told us to give Benadryl 100mg PO before we brought them back. The other two had no reaction of any kind. Shortly after the second series of shots the lumps went away and nothing since then.

So far we haven't had any run ins with snakes so I don't know if they work or not but just for the piece of mind it gives us we did it this year and will continue to do so.
