Puppy Progress?

Hey...did I read that right, the little guy had his first point! Nice report and pictures!
Any thoughts on keeping a lead on him while doing the retrieving training?

He did have some other points before on the quail I got a few weeks ago. But today and when I got the quail I was leading him to the area a little.

I'll use a long lead when working on retrieving when I really work on that. My main goal for today was to have Champ pick something up with feathers on it. But hopefully I won't need to do much work on retrieving. I was lucky enough with Blitz that he retrieved naturally. I recently joined NAVHDA and they train in my area, so I hope to get some help from them along the way. My plan is to have Champ ready for the NA test in September along with the AKC JH test. Then I'll see what spring of 2016 brings.

Great pics Bauer! Really looks like Champ is coming along nicely!

Weather has been pretty miserable down here in VA too so it's been tough getting the dog out. Sadie's now 8 months old and we are really working on obedience and walking at heel off lead. She certainly knows the commands, it just comes down to her wanting to comply. I have begun to introduce her to the e-collar but it is a delicate process that I am taking my time on since I'm not an expect. I am also working on force fetching her. The FF isn't because she won't retrieve, but more for the 'Hold' aspect. She is really making lots of progress and I have no doubt that she will be ready by next fall, as long as I can find time to keep working with her. She'll be getting a brother or sister in a couple months so the training we are doing is for more than just hunting.

Looking good great photos we can't catch a break here I had transmission troubles today it's at the shop. We might be home doing next to nothing again Drakes not going to be happy and we have a large layer of ice on our snow. great to see some birds making it looks like fun.

Did you get out last weekend?

No I didn't Drake and I are sitting around getting fat..lol it was my transmission that went out should be done today hoping to go to NORTHEAST REGIONAL CHUKAR CHALLENGE CHAMPIONSHIP at Warriors Marks next weekend. Glad to see your able to get out with your pup looks like your going to have fun for years to come.

Good luck at Warriors Mark. I've never done a chukar challenge but thought about it in the past. I did sign up for one several years ago but it ended up being cancelled. Share some pictures if you get a chance to take any. And have fun.

Sorry it has been so long since I posted on here. either my wife or I works with Ember every day. She is doing very well. She has sit stay come down very well although she sometimes wants to break after a dummy before she is released, any suggestions with that would be most appreciated. I found this guy hit by a car on my way home from work, so I threw it in the bed of my truck. She was a little unsure at first, but once I got her to hold it she retrieved it like a champ.:)

Nice report and pictures! One thing I like to do with young dogs is create "controled " training enviroments, for instance, you can use feeding time as a training tool. Tell pup to sit while holding his feeding bowl, as you start to lower it he will want to go to it, when he does pick it up and use your stay command, he'll soon figure out if he wants to eat he has to listen. Make him wait a little longer each time before giving him the release command.

Please be very careful when using birds found that way!

Great looking pup and thanks for the report!

Good to hear she is coming along..liked the pictures!

OK... How are the puppies coming along this summer? Fall seems so far away now and I need something to fill the void.

Hey Guys! It has been a while since I've been on. Things have been crazy (more posts to follow to explain why). Sadie is coming along nicely with her training. She turns 1 tomorrow, and has made huge strides over the past few months. The main thing I will need to work with her on over the next few months is keeping her in range when on a scent. Right now she gets a little excited and will extend a little too far. I would also like to shoot over her a few more times and teach her how to sit on flush. She is wonderful at quartering, taking hand signals, walking at heel, and delivering to heel/holding until given the command to drop. Here are some pics from our recent training sessions. We've been working in both water and on land. On a side note, has anyone ever snake trained their dog to avoid snakes? I know PA has an increasing rattlesnake population, and I'm curious if anyones dog has ever ended up on the wrong side of the dog's curiosity

Looks like Sadie is coming along fine!

I've been hunting bird hunting for over 4 decades and have only seen rattle snakes twice in Pa., I would be more worried about porcupines, if you plan on hunting in the grouse woods.
