Pup hunts the cat

My 7 month old GSP constantly hunts the family cat. He has been great with it until a couple months ago. He will stand right over the top of it like on point. Run around the house trying to find her. Gets too quit and there he is staring down the cat. How do I get this to stop? Getting old quick and it pisses off the wife. Thanks for any help.

E-collar !!!!!! Same way with the chasing of rabbits and deer!!!! Break it early!

cats, continental dogs, we hunt, and eat everything

I should have said fur in general. Ihad been away from hunting and pointing dogs for a while, got back into it and decided after a lifetime of pointers and setters, to try french brittanies. Have to say that they were pretty much as advertised, smart, nearly broke themselves, all good things.... except, cats, mice, rabbits, deer, anything FUR. I have never used an e-collar. Problem is, with all the continental breeds, it's bred into them for a couple a hundred years. Hell the europeans are plumb proud of it, to the point I want to punch the next idiot that talks about "sharpness on game", sharpness toward man, ( E-gads! in this lawsuit happy enviornment), and blood trailing deer, killing foxes, etc. Suffice to say, I now own an e-collar, couldn't agree with the above advice more. I have by use of discretionary electric voltage to work out a cautious peace between the cats, skunks, deer, " hairy what have you", and the "bird dogs", as long as the threat of electrocution is present. Otherwise all bets are off. Pretty sorry state of affairs, to have to resort to that. I have seen and been around countless shorthairs which were the same way. My english setters and pointers, slept with the cats, by the way. Primary problem is active minds and off season boredom. Pay your money, take your chances, or marry in haste, repent at leisure.

clarification

I just read my own post, and realized it took a tone that was not intended. I certainly didn't intend to demean anyone's dog, or breed, much less imply any dispursions on anyone's relationship. I am in complete sympathy with any one's wife who doesn't want her cat harrased. I was merely commenting on my experience with britts, and shorthairs, as compared with setters and pointers, and expressing the opinion that when we, ( me included), pick a breed, we need to have realistic expectations, being bred and trained to hunt fur for a hundred years, it is unrealistic to expect them not to be gamey toward furred game, especially when it's the only game in town. I think individuals within breeds show a marked degree of difference in this regard. Hence my remark, about marriage,(referencing the dog, not anyone's wife, in a lifetime relationship, for better or worse). If I had it to do again, I would avoid anything that has a "fur" gene. I guess, I am co-miserating with the problem, because I believe it is a problem which could have been selectively eliminated by breeding, rather than perpetuated, forcing us to deal with it in each sucessive generation and indivdual within that generation.

old and new maybe next you should try the American britt just sayin mine have no desire to mess with cats mice deer etc unless they are in their food bowl

First comes hunting and later comes eating. My wife called me out the other day and told me to clean up the cat parts. It seems a couple cats ran through the yard and did not make it. They don't seem to like cats.

reminds me of my wife's grandmothers dog. we were visiting her 90 year old grandma. her poddle rex did a little more than just stand over the cat. we heard a terrible noise in back yard. her grandson and i went to check it out. nell hobbled behind us. we got there first. rex had a cat pinned to the ground and was humping the heck out of it.we were laughing very loud! then nell shows up and wags her finger at rex and says now now rex thats a naughty dog you shoulnt do that. we totally lost it at that point.

Had that problem once as well...Here is one of my rescues "Major" meeting "Frank the Girl Cat"; about two seconds after this picture, Major was bleeding, cat was sleeping, and problem solved.

you've let it go on for awhile- pup thinks it's ok- it's a game- you're going to have to start right now- bust the pup everytime it goes near, stands over, or chases

what you don't want- is the youngster thinking cats are fun- someday it'll run into a wise Tom cat- that cat will hiss- then latch on to the face and nose- I've seen a couple with eyes ruined- sure maybe the cat was killed- but- break the pup now

there are some that say a GSP or others will kill any cat quick- I've seen a couple tom cats that would fight a dog- and I've seen a dog with a cat latched to the face- it's not pretty
