Pheasant Report

Good stuff...taking a kid this year that's never been wild pheasant hunting anywhere. I am excited to show him a great time and this only makes the wait that much worse! Keep the updates coming guys!:10sign:

Thanks Jim not only for your report but also for being a part of the very existence of those birds. Thank you gracious wife for us too! Hope to see you this fall!:10sign:

Habitat update

Out checking on some food plots---we need a little rain. On the way out I did a slow speed check on the trees I planted last year just behind the house--some of the dead looking cedars are now showing signs of life and the hen with her brood of 12 chicks thought they were just the place to hide out.

Here are some pictures

Food Plot 3

Lots of Purple Prairie Clover in the CRP this year--a very good sign :)

Yes there is a LOT of cover this year -- this is on the 25 acres just behind the house.

July 4th weekend- Eastern SD

Well just returned from the house in SD. Managed to get out in evenings after working on the house to look for birds. We ended up covering a 50-60 mile range and the birds were well dispersed over the whole area.

We viewed multiple hens with 8-12 chicks of various sizes. We also noticed a good volume of paired birds(Hen/Rooster), they seem to still be breeding so there will be some immature birds early in the season.

I was also amazed at the volume of roosters running around. The carry over numbers look to be up from past years. Overall the number of birds we seen was well up from the previous 2 years for sure. It will be interesting to see what the GFP forecast is in Sept. I plan on making one more trip out over Labor day and will report again on bird numbers at that time.

Finally the habitat(cover) this year looks exceptional, the roosters will have lots of area to hide. If things hold out it could be a great year in SD!

Based on what I am seeing as we put up hay, I would say that the hatch around here is mostly over. We are finding nests that have hatched. There are still some ducks sitting on nests but the pheasant nests are done. I think that should be good news for this fall. We still have dew in the mornings but we could use an inch of rain.

New here

I'm knew to the forum,so I'm trying to figure things out. We are coming out this fall to the chamberlain area. It's a father son outing, with all three dads in their 80s and and never hunted SD. Looking more forward to this trip than any in the past. How's the hatch looking in this area?

welcome to the forum shay dog im sure u will like it here... we will know more by mid agust when the brood/road side survey numbers come out chamberlain is always tops...

i wish u and ur group the best of luck on ur trip im sure u will have a blast... u hunting public or private lands??? there is birds on both just curious...

Thanks. We will be hunting public land. Hoping we might stumble on some private once we get back there. We will just take it one day at a time and try to get these old timers some shooting. Either way it will be fun.

Whether you do a lot of shooting or not, enjoy every moment and make as many memories as you can as that's what it's about to me...passing things on to the next generation. Took my grandpa on his last Wyoming pronghorn hunt when he was 80, we both tagged out...will never forget that trip!

Welcome Shay dog, wishing you guys the best of adventures!
Some pretty straight forward guys on the forums and their happy to be of help.

From all the posts I've read everyone seems very straight forward and very helpful. The good times have already started and we are months away from our trip. We have 3 old timers that are as excited as little kids going to Disney land for the first time. I'm really looking forward to this trip, can't get here soon enough.

Shay Dog , welcome to UPH!! I was blessed that my parents let me go up to Chamberlin when I was 16 with a buddy who was 16. Drove home in a blizzard. I had the time of my life there!!! Almost 33 years ago! You all will have a blast.
