Has anyone else ever had a dog point a porcupine? My 18 month old GSP got a mouth full of quills last week in SD. I know this is the Kansas forum but I just thought I would ask. A learning experience for me (and her!) for sure. Does kansas even have these scary critters?:

There are some in the western portions of the state. I have not had any of my current dogs point one but growing up grouse hunting in the north woods it was pretty regular at least once or twice a year. Good luck with the healing process hope all goes well.

Thanks. She hasn't shown any signs of problems. I had to pull several out of her mouth. She didn't have any swelling or any problems eating or drinking. She was pretty lucky I think. In the eyes could have been catastrophic! I'm headed out to grahm co next week??? is that as far west as you describe?

I damn near stepped on one walking into my treestand one morning 4 years ago. Also saw one on the south side of the lake at Cedar Bluff several years ago.

Happened to my dog last year in ND. Dogs point them like birds and it is a surprise when you walk in on them. He got it bad, six staples in his face when it was all done. I'm pretty sure he learned his lesson. I've never seen one in KS, but heard there are some around. Might want to check with your vet and see if antibiotics are in order.

My dog pointed a porcupine once in Sheridan County. Fortunately he did not make contact -- good dog!

After all my skunk problems, I ran into two porkies within about 5o yards of each other in western SD. DOG POINTED BOTH THO I KNEW IT WAS HAIR AS THEY ARE ALWAYS A LITTLE FIDGETY AROUND FUR. FORTUNATELY NO CONTACT AND I SHOT BOTH. I REALLY DON'T LIKE KILLING PORKIES AS THEY ARE A RATHER BENIGN CRITTER, BUT THEY CAN MAKE A MESS OUT OF DOGS AND LIVESTOCK.

They are in Kansas. First one I saw in Ford County was in 1958, killed by a coon hunter that had a dog get quilled. I had one dog get into one at the ranch in about 1981. One dog got into one about 1998 on the west end of Meade State Lake Wildlife Area.

Then I have this guy leaning up against the stock tank, munching on dinner.

This doe is checking him out.

My dogs and I ran into one on the Cimarron last year on the last weekend of the season. The old female didn't get it to bad, I took care of her. The male decided to take a bite, and it took us to the vet, on a Sunday night. Nice bill, but worth it. Hope he has learned his lesson!
