opening weekend luck

Well it was a great day in western kansas this morning I ended up working but this afternoon my group of 12 ended up with a grand total of12 roosters and some very tired dogs what a great hunt

Joe,
I can not believe they got you to work on opening day, I bet there was a fight over it :) Glad you still got out and killed a few. There is always tomorrow.

Man, it hurts to sit down here and listen to you guys who are getting to go!

It will be the 26th before I can head that way.....kinda like waiting on Christmas morning way back when I was a button.

Great opening day; 17 rosters in the am for 11 hunters 13 take from Kansas Walk In Land. After lunch just 1 roster but saw a ton of hens.

We were done at 10:19 this morning. I have never hunted with more than 3 people. If thats what floats your boat fine. I just could never see the fun in not being able to identify who shot a bird. By the way my dog flushed 7 of the birds we shot and pointed the other.

3 of us finished with 10 birds, should have easily got our limit, saw easily 200 pheasants today, but many were wild, good scenting conditions and some very nice dog work, many points and i shot a studder-step double, will try to post up some pics tomorrow, too tired to do it tonight, will be out again first thing in the morning! good luck to all!

Group of about 10 & while I don't think we limited out, we seen a couple covey of quail - ended up with 1, & seen more prairie chicken than I've seen in my lifetime here in Western KS.

Being with a group, my memorable moment is the luck of being the one to down the 1st wild pheasant for my 10 month old Penny & she had to chase it down before delivering to my hand wings still flapping.

I alternated dogs today, so I can't wait until next weekend when it's just me & the dogs so they can hunt together.

Lots of prairie chickens the last 2 years. I hope people realize that season is closed now. We called the warden last year as we watched some Colorado hunters try to shoot them on some walk-in opening week. It was nice to see that the Wildlife and Parks sent out officers from eastern ks to patrol our end of the state this weekend.

Tons of hunting pressure today, hunters in every field. When one army got finished a new army would walk the same field again. Crazy, right? I heard my gun go off four times and ended up with four beautiful roosters. I am on a big roll right now. Ended last season with 21 straight and 8 in a row to start this year. The gun goes off and the poor pheasant goes into the death flop. I am trying to get through the season without one single lost runner and no hens shot. So far so good. Be back tomorrow morning for more heavy duty lifting. Someone has to do this dirty job. My last field today was loaded with birds with roosters flushing all around me. I only needed two so took two easy shots to finish out for today. This particular field was great three years ago and the past two years I didn't see even a hen. Now, the cut milo is back and so are the birds. But, lots of fields don't hold any or very very few birds. Again, lots of ground is posted this year. Lost two more honey holes as the giant armies swamped them yesterday and today. A good thing only lasts so long.

Joe, we only got 20!!!! I think we missed 2!! Morning, we only shot 3, went to a different spot for the afternoon and saw plenty!!!

Joe, nice to finally meet you!! And if the Banjo's were playing, they were playing in Grainfield you Redneck!!! I was wondering why nobody waved at me???? You must of told a few Whoppers before I got there!!!!LOL:cheers:

Sorry for the tailgate photo's everyone, I was whipped after that field!! Walked 1/2 mile then turned north, walked to the end, which was a mile, then turned east and walked a 1/2 mile, got picked up, went back to the start and walked1/2 mile, turned around and walked a 1/2 mile back!!! My ass was done!!!! Pulled my groin, stepped in 3 badger holes, so my knee was jacked up, which I am already PCL and MCL deficient, then my back starts hurting because I am trying to compensate, Then to top it off, I forgot all my Beer back at the House!!! Damn!!!!

Dry where we were!!! East of Dodge, I don't know! They took a lot Thur, and early Fri!!! We were north!!!

nice pics blue no whoppers were told they just didn't feel like waiving sunday was a lot rougher to hunt than saturday all the birds were quick learners

Our group of 4 shot limits both days in Southwest Kansas on private ground. We didn't find many birds in the grass, most were shot in the feed. It was very dry on Saturday, but we did get a little mosture on Saturday night. As dry as it was, the dogs scented very well and our shooting was pretty good as we didn't miss many birds. Bird numbers seem to be a little above average where we were hunting. We spoke to a few groups that were hunting walk-in and they had very little success. It doesn't surprise me as most of the walk-in land is CRP and we didn't get many birds out of the CRP. Couldn't ask for better weather for an Opening Weekend and all in all had a great time.

good start to the season

We had 14 in our group with kids and we took 30 rooster saturday and 2 sunday. Get up 6 coveys and took only 4 birds by choice. Leavin the rest alone till later in the season....Just aint fair with that many hunters. I shot no bird but had more fun watchin the kids and the dogs hunt.
