So now that the season is over ... Do any of you do AKC hunt tests, field trials or NAVHDA tests?

We are getting ready for the spring hunt tests here in Colorado. Dakota has a Senior Hunter title and we are working towards Master Hunter this spring and fall. Also, our new - guy 5 1/2 month old Weimaraner, Blitz, will be running in Junior Hunter, - wanting to get him involved in NAVHDA as well.

For us the year goes like this ... get ready for fall hunt tests; pheasant hunting season starts and spend 3 months unlearning everything; get ready for spring hunt tests, starting all over again.

I have run AKC tests but I may run HRC this year. The entrance fees are half as much, you can sign the day of the event (avoid the cost of EE) and if you fail a test you can still run the remainder. I would really like to get a master or finished pass for my old dog this summer I doubt I will put in the effort to get the tiltle but you never know. My pup is ready for JR or started but I hope to be ready for senior come spring.......Might be a bit ambitious! He runs doubles real well, is dang steady for a pup but lacks confidence on blinds. All in good time.

I think we have had discussions along this line before on this site but it never hurts to run it up the ol' flag pole again. :) I run my Brittany on NSTRA trials and have signed up for 5 of them starting in mid-March. It keeps me active with the dog and besides, we both enjoy the trials and the people.

As my wife says "It gives you something to do, and keeps you out of trouble."

We were planning to run some Colorado Gun Dog Association Chukar Trials (similar to NSTRA) but the weather hasn't cooperated ... too much snow. Events have been cancelled/rescheduled 3 weeks in a row. Grrrr. They have even closed the fields to training ... not that anyone could actually do much training in 6ft snow drifts.

I like doing the AKC hunt tests ... it's like gambling for me, you never know which dog is going to show up - the good one, or the evil twin.

With the new pup, we're wanting to get him going in NAVHDA ... our 5 year old male, Dakota, would flunk the duck search ... possibly traumatized by a duck  - despite numerous attempts to get him interested in ducks, he wants nothing to do with them.

But as one of the the old guys that I hunt and train with says, "These tests are just a game, but huntin' is the real thing."

I hopefully be able to run my Chessie in a couple of HRC events to get his finish title in IL. and maybe Wis. or MN. if we get his Finish title I will probably run him in the AKC events this year.

NAVHDA for me. Helping a couple of puppy purchasers too. Otherwise the dogs get a lot of swimming in in the summer.
