Iowan here, counting down the days till retirement, which will be in SD. Already have ground bought and house built, which is a good thing.

Raised in Mn. Graduated in 76, and moved to Iowa, cant wait to get to SD.

Have hunted over traditional Black Labs all my life, but yet at this time, Im Labless. I have two GSP females, Ellie is 8 yrs old and was a rescue from a divorce.

I just got a new GSP last year at this time, who is 18 months old.. Her name is Breez, but shouldve been Tornado, ( or Stitches) I think shes tried to tear down half the fences in SD already this year. She's came home from last weeks trip with 9 staples in her chest, a puncture wound in her front leg and a gash in her thigh. ( all looked at by a vet)

My season starts out in January with river fishing walleyes till early June. Then I take a break from the outdoors and chase the sprint cars around the midwest till Sept 1, then hunting season kicks in. Its a viscious cycle I tell ya.

Married at 19, 35 years ago to an older woman, self employed for the last 10 years, worked construction for the previous 25 Only daughter getting married less than a month away, and wifes retirement pension kicks in next year.

I can do what I do anywhere so as soon as things are secure, Im outa here.

Go west young man!..

This seems like a great site! Wish I woulda found it sooner.

Thanks guys for the welcome.

My schedule freed up a bit this week, and if I can cancel a doctors appointment on Thursday, Im heading west again Wed night.

I found an hours worth of work in Pierre for Thursday or Friday, so I jumped at the opportunity.:D

I just needed any kind of excuse, and this one fits the bill perfectly, even if I have to haul a few tools around while I'm hunting.

Got a few honeydos to take care of today before I get fully released, so I better remove myself from the keyboard for a couple of hours.

I got the best wife in the world!

Welcome to the site, reddog. Just curious where you are going to moving to in SD? And also where you were from originally in MN? You see, I'm originally from Canby, MN and have lived in SD for over 30 years so we have a little in common. I'm retired and lovin' it!

Welcome to UPH, pull up a stool and enjoy. I see Breez has some good bloodline. Hope to hear from you often.:coolpics:

Zeb,

I grew up in Hatfield Mn, and went to school in Pipestone..

I have 7 acres and cabin that we built in 2000 in Chamberlain, but I dont think I can get the wife to retire that far west.

Im thinking about starting to look along the I90 corridor somewhere west of Sioux Falls, Hartford/ Humboldt area..

It takes alot of dog power to hunt SD, and I hope to have a whole platoon when I get settled in ..

OKIE,

It was one of the "right place at the right time" when Breez found me. Kind of a chance meeting, so I feel blessed to have her riding shotgun.

My largest dumb a$$ attack happened earlier this year.

I was hunting the reservation on opening weekend for pheasants, and it was a 10 am start on Sunday. I hunted the old meat dog from 10 to 11:45, and it was hot. I was hydrating her regularly, but almost out of water in my vest when we got back to the truck. My main focus was getting her cooled down, so I layed my 686 Beretta White Onyx 20ga up against the rear passenger tire of my truck. I got the dogs watered, and then went around to the drivers side, and took off my Tshirt and cleaned myself up. While doing that, I decided that it was going to be too hot to hunt till late in the afternoon, so I decided to head to Pierre, get a sandwich and lay around Oahe dam for a couple three hours. I loaded up the dogs, and away we went.

Got a Subway sandwich, and headed to the tailrace. We spent a couple hours enjoying the afternoon, and the water. (why is it that whenever you take a dog for a leisurely trip to water, that they are able to find dead fish to roll in. Or for all that matters, why do they roll in that carp to begin with?) About 3:30 I decided to head back to the res. Loaded up the dogs, and headed back. About 10 miles down the road, I look at my passenger seat and my shotgun is no longer riding shotgun with me. I take a look in the back seat, nope, no gun. I think my stomach dropped out onto hyway 1806 at that time. Then it struck me. I never put it in the truck when I left the WIA to head to Pierre.

Now I can tell you all kinds of thoughts go thru your head when you discover something like that, but first and foremost, how am I going to tell my wife that I lost the shotgun that she gave me for our 30th anniversary? Then how do you tell your friends what a dummy you are? My brain was firing on all cylinders, along with the truck, who now was sucking gas like a maniac. My brain kicked in a little later, when I was going 85 down a gravel road, and said to me. Slow down, theres no sense in wrecking your truck, or possibly losing your life over this. Its not that bad. It will either be there, or it wont. After 3 1/2 hours, a couple more minutes probably wont make any difference.... so I slowed down, and thought some more.

I finally hit the parking area, and no one is in it, but a piece of toilet paper that wasnt there when I left. Uh Oh........... Put the truck in park, and walk to where I was parked, and there she lays in the grass, just as pretty as the day I opening the box...... even prettier!

I think we floated back to the truck and I dont think she ever felt as good in my hands as at that moment...

Life is Good......
