Not a complete bust but......

We killed 20 birds over the weekend, I didn't check every one being cleaned, but also saw a wide mix of young and old on the spurs. Had a few that when flushed if the guys weren't in the right light thought they were hens due zero tail feathers, had to rely on guys with the sun at their back to yell rooster after seeing the color.

A pheasant flew over me and I could not identify it. Saw where it landed and shot it. The rooster's head was black, no red color. Do young roosters lack the color of older birds?

the color does come in eventually, all black head is a recessive gene i would guess.

Killed 25 roosters over the weekend on family farm and shot 12 quail with a group of guys numbers pretty good and way up moved 10 coveys the whole weekend

Still a fun weekend

The older I get the more the more fun I have watching my kids getting into bird hunting. At the end of the day....if a kid has a something to do..they focus on the task at hand.....Our new Red Lab was trained almost entirely by my 12 year old. Without something to do....they end up finding something to do...some times not for the good things in life.

Seems to be hit and miss but generally better.. Heard a group of 16 hunters took 82 birds down by Dodge and a group of 21 hunters took 22 birds near Larned..

According to the KDWP website, the possession limit is 16. However, if the Dodge City group had 16 and harvested 82 birds opening weekend (assuming they hunted Saturday and Sunday) they were still 46 birds shy of their limit of 128.

I would not consider a group of 21 hunting.

I would tend to agree. Although I know this has been debated on here many times before. Personally, my fondest memories are of hunts with just me and my dad and the dogs. I consider anything over 5 or 6 guys a "big" group, but that's just my personal preference.

2.5 bird average per hunter for 2 days....(16 hunters)

.5 bird average per hunter for 2 days......(21 hunters)

Point of the post was to show how spotty the hunting can be, not how ones personal preference relates to the "definition of hunting." Just because I don't choose to hunt in a large group does not make it any more justified...That is just an elitest mentality ... We are all hunters, paying the same fees set forth by which State or States we choose to hunt. Some of us enjoy the 1 or 2 man set with a few dogs on the ground. Others enjoy having friends and family enjoy opening weekend with a larger group.

My bad for getting the whole topic off track- I was thinking of one day opener, not 2...
