Northwest Kansas

atwood

i left the area on thur. nite. the secondary dirt roads, some were thawing out and were getting muddy, ie: slippery. i hunted in really nice weather. thinking pretty hard about going back maybe on wed for a couple of days and maybe spend a day just kinda n. of oberlin where the odds of seeing a quail or two are greater. some around atwood but don't count on finding them. think there are getting a warmer trend later in the week. the older i get the fairer weather hunter i am becoming even though the first month it was way too warm

Friday afternoon I got stuck on a minimum maintenance road on level ground. I've always called that stuff black Crisco, and man did it live up to it's reputation. I was in 4wd and spinning in place. Finally actually slid off the side of the road, bumped into the edge of the cornfield and went bumping and banging from side to side in reverse for about 50 yards before I got back to dry dry road. Naturally in the middle of Egypt and hadn't seen a truck in about 3 hours. I thought I would have to walk out.

slick mud

in my 40 or so years out there i have been stuck twice on the level, both times went an got a farmer and his tractor, your other choice of course in to just stay in your truck till about two in the morning, by then the road will have frozen and you can be on your way. i do carry chains frequently, not sure they would do the job or not, maybe just bury you. some years when we have more moisture out there the situation crop up quite often, ya, four wheel doesn't do much for ya when it is that slick

new tires

would love to. know of any good one's out there that won't get you stuck, if you haven't had, enjoyed the problem, that we were discussing then you are spend too much time on the couch, kansas soil can be slicker than snot, surprised ya don't know that, but then 40 years for me is a lot of time to have lot's of things happen, hell, once i even shot a bird or two, both times the tractor was able to stay on the road only cause it was so wide that there was no place for it to slide to

It won't matter what tires you have when she thaws! I have very capable tires on a 89 Forerunner that goes just about anywhere!! Took me 45 minutes to navigate sideways down the road after it thawed to the highway, which was 4 miles away! Parked in the driveway at home and it decided to fall off the vehicle in ernest!! I have all of your topsoil back here now!!!

Thaws

Think about this. I was on a dirt road and then it thawed out and I was pulling a dog trailer. Man that was a deal. I did get out but it was so slick. I was running Bridgestone Revos and driving a Cruiser. Didn't think I was going to make it.

The first time it happened to me, I had just bought new tires. The top few inches of mush thaw out and below is frozen. It's the slicest stuff I've ever had to deal with. By the way, there's plenty of it in Colorado as well.

Somebody already said, it's not where we go to get in, it's being there and a road thaws and you have to get back! Dog trailers I sold, for the mud thing and the blizzards, and trying to get turned around. Four wheel drive and mud buster tires are fine, but they aren't infallable! High undercarriage is at least as important. I have had to jack up the truck with the jack on the spare tire wheel, to use a shovel to scoop it clear. I have a winch too! In the prairie you have to have something to winch to, or from, that can be problematic. What you have, be in a worse spot that you are originally! Personally, I like to hunt than find myself fighting to get free. Walk in, a sauter down the muddy lane is my theory, at least if I can get to the truck, I can drive home!

sorry birds

hunted the n. w. thur. afternoon and most of fri. most old snow is gone, roads were dry east of oberlin and very muddy s. of norton, in fact some were closed. thur. say only 18 birds, 9 roosters and shot 3 and missed one, still at my one bird every hour, birds were younger, fri. hunted much of the day, had two hens pointed and that is all i saw, there goes my 1 bird per hour. never in my life have i every seen so few birds as i did that day, not shooting a bird has happened before but i have never gone without seeing some. whatever!

cheers
