Northwest Kansas

there ain't been a decent setter since count gladstone or johnny crocket unless you of course want to believe ol' spaulding hoffhacker. those other photo's of a setter on point just had to have been staged cause everyone out there know they just don't do that sort of thing

cheers

Please DFTFT

murphy

i remember something about murphy, i think it was murphey's law, said something like if it can screw up it certainly will, probably referring to setters at the time, i don't care what ol' spaulding thinks

I've been noticing that MUTT has a lot of opinions, but I'm seeing he is mostly full of SHAT!!! Enjoy your hard work MUTT!!! I'm embarrassed for you!!

What is the best, the absolute best part of bird hunting? We all agree....watching the dog work. We love our dogs. Especially if we've more or less trained them ourselves. Doesn't matter if it's a mixed breed mongrel, or a pure bred from championship lines, we love our dogs....and of course the one we have is always the best. Good hunting gents and all in good fun.

dog types

for those of you who selectively read, here it is again. enjoy your dog and time in the field, if lassie gets the job done for you, wonderful there ain't a best dog out there, don't lose you humor over it

NW

Well this thread has gotten way off base. Any helpful information anyone has about NW or other parts of KS for Pheasant hunting would be greatly appreciated. Please pm me if you like with info. I am coming out to the great state the last week of the season. I've missed several seasons due to personal reasons and need to walk the grass with the new dog.

Thanks
Steve

I certainly agree. There was an old trainer here in the Denver area. Said chocolate labs were a genetic anomaly, not worth the time to even train. He wanted to show how great his GSP was in comparison. Went to open the kennel latch, the dog damn near bowled him over, raced out and ate the planted quail.

HA! True Story.

Steve, you are right. Sorry we all hi-jacked your thread. If you are going to be in the Atwood area that last weekend, I would be glad to meet up with you and show what I know of that area. I usually hunt west of there, but I have a few places on private ground with permission. I am going out this week to check it out, so I will give you another update next week.

Matt

Good luck to you, Birdman2! Shoot'em up!!

Hopefully, between you and Bird-man can hook up and get'r done!!

I am headed out Atwood way tomorrow evening. My first time hunting out that far west, hope their are birds there. It is a long drive

n. w. birds

spent 2 1/1 hours hunting near atwood on wed. old snow was melting kinda fast. saw 18 birds, shot 3. put in 5 hr. on thur. saw nearly 140, shot 2 and missed a couple, no i didn't feel sorry for them. snow was still melting, most all birds were in very short weeded wheat stubble and very spooky. points were hard to come by but there were some. hunted by knocking on 2 doors, the rest walk-in prop. use 2 shorthairs, saw no hunters. there are essentially no quail in the area and damn few chickens. nearly every place i hunted i got up something. also out of 38 roosters this year, i am now up to 5 younger birds, have been seeing quite a few hens, heaven help both them and us for next year. winter wheat is not looking all that good either

cheers

weather

birdman2, ya know, kansas does have a weather man and they are just about as poor at it as all the rest, call him up anyway. right now snowing like a mad bastard here in greeley, just what our broncos need, that including 20 deg. weather for the game

mustistuff

I was in the Atwood area on Thursday and Friday. Didn't see quite the numbers, but there were birds around. I took one out of the tall wheat stubble. Didn't even bother with that short stuff. May try it next time. Then took one more out of a long deep draw with that tall CRP stuff. Not as tall as usual, but still a b*tch to muscle through. Both birds over nice points.

What did you think of the roads? When I left on Friday a dust storm blew in like the dust bowl days. Then hit a blizzard on the way into Colorado. Crazy stuff.
