Plenty of Birds

002-2.jpg

Just got home from the opening weekend and--numbers were down on my land and around the area of Platte. On my place down about 50% I would say and the really dry conditions for the dogs sucked--still we got 44 roosters with 18 hunters--so not to bad.:D

Had one dog skunked!!!!, but on the bright side first roosters fell to first year hunters one age 14 along with one of our new hunting ladies--congrats to both.

I'll post some picts tomorrow

I just got back from Pierre last night. We all did great and I limiyed out both days by 1 oclock. The weather got in the way of fishing on thursday(freakin wind), so wasnt able to catch but 3 walleyes at the tailraces. Plenty ofpeople fishing there too. The hunters were all over the place north, up by Agar and Onida.God I wish those guys would sta away, they are ruining the hunting for the locals. Ive never payed to hunt and I hope it never comes to that, but I bet it will someday.Lost my honeyhole to some out of state payed hunters, thanks guys.I dont even blame the farmers anymore,if theirs money in it id do it too if I had land . The numbers were about the same as last year, but not much for the road hunters. The ditches are all cut with nothing growing back for any type of cover. The birds were a bit wild with lots of them flushing way out of range Did see plenty of deer and no signs of hemoragic die off. Actually the pheasants are all gone in Sully county and the deer are all dead.Got skunked fishiing too.Dont bother hunting Sully county or fishing in Pierre. Its really ugly their too.Sand dunes as far as the eye can see.

Only in SD will you hear someone brag about limiting in an hour, and bitch about out-of-staters ruining their hunt in the same paragraph.:D

Glad you were successful.

Reports coming in from our Faulkton and Hosmer camps were early limits for the groups of 10 that were hunting there.

Faulkton group had been hunting there a few years now and said they had never seen as many birds.

Great pic on the youths first rooster Jim. First bord for youth is worth a whole limit for group of 10.

Pheasant Camp Lodge?

Hi Chris,
We are on our way from Michigan right now for week 2. How was hunting on your PCL this last week?

Just returned from the Selby, Eureka area. My kid bailed at the last minute so it ended up being just my brother in law and me. Hunted public land all three days. Limit in 47 minutes day one. Four hours Sunday mostly because we ran into hunters at the spots we wanted. It really wasn't bad as far as pressure. Monday we were out the door at 8am to do some scouting. It paid off we had our limit in 33 minutes.

Side note: What a waste WIA is. Nothing but cattle pounded ground with zero cover and most still had cattle on it. We did not see one hunter on any of it and there is literally square miles of it out there.

I concur, got a nice report from our Selby opener group and there were limits taken at our camp there.

Sounds like everyone is finding good birds so far up there!! Congrats and thanx for sharing some pic's!!! One pic I had to smile about, it was from Wirehair! If Kansas and South Dakota were neighbors it would look like this pic with the dog sitting in Kansas and ready to hunt South Dakota!!!!

We looked at WIA from Hoven to Eureka. Didn't see a blade a grass higher then two inches at one of them. And not ONE hunter at any of them.

Here's a photo just in from our Boar's Nest Camp Opening Group. I also just got off phone with opening group at my place and I was amazed to learn that they saw several hundred pheasants with majority being roosters. The brood mortality might have been lower than previously thought.
