Hello, newbie and will be my 1st season with my 7mo Britt pup looking for our 1st season out west. Just looking for tips with my pup on our 1st trip and mayb suggestion a place we can just hunt. Really don't care if we get birds or not want my pup to have a good time out on his 1st hunt. He did well for Dove.

Thanks all!

I've had Britt's for over 20 years. At 7 months just get your dog in the field and on as many birds as possible. Certainly don't expect a lot from him. About all you need to concentrate on is controlling him in the field. Don't be concerned if he points or retrieves at this age. It's mainly a learning experience for the dog. If he has the breeding he should figure it out, but that could take 2-3 years.

You only said you are going "out west". Where is that? Tough to help with where to hunt if you don't provide a location. Also, where are you from?

Thanks! I'm from the Twin Cities. At 7mo we have been training once or twice a day on pigeons. He is quite birdie and points good for 7mo. Not expecting much but to get him out to the field. I will be headjng towards Fergus Falls area not sure the exact spot yet still researching.

Well you have good numbers of pheasant and grouse in MN. We also still have the peak of the woodcock migration ahead of us (probably between now and the end of the month). If you can hit the woodcock migration at or near its peak you will get your young dog a lot of wild bird contacts and woodcock hold real well for a pointing dog.

Thanks for the info! With limited time I don't think i can make it out there this year but planning 2018 to come out there. Great info and thank you!

Thanks Joel. Planning to get him as much exposure as I can including game farm and learning the rope from a friend's 6yrs old Britt.

Seanchief, I too am from the Twin Cities area. Northwestern suburb. Sen me a PM if you are interested in a game farm type hunt for the pup. I have a really nice place where we can set your pup up for success on planted birds.

Thanks Joel. Planning to get him as much exposure as I can including game farm and learning the rope from a friend's 6yrs old Britt.

For $25 you can hunt at Major Ave. Gun Club, west of the TC. Birds would be extra. A great place to train your dog - short or longer grass, your choice.

Good Luck with your new pal.

Just want to give a quick update. Thanks to all for you tips and encouragement. My 7mo puppy Chief did awesome exceeded my expectation. Right out onto the field at legal time, Chief found a rooster and pointed my beeper hawk scream went off and as a pup he moved in to find after point flushed out the 1st rooster in 5mins no shot as his flight path was directly over another hunter not in our party. Another 60uds and Chief flushed out 5 hens. Went another 200yds and 1st rooster was on the ground which Chief pinned down and grab him by the shoulder neck area and keeps falling as grass hit the rooster. He was super stokes so was I. He flushed out to more rooster in a super tall grass over mh head and no shot. We ended up with just the one rooster but so proud of Chief. Looking forward to our next trip.
