New UGUIDE Pheasant Camp

Looks like a nice place Chris. How did you manage to land that place?

Nice looking place.
You did a good job on your web site I will have to go back and spend more time checking this out.

uguide

great looking place, just what i am looking for, are u running this place? if so ill be seeing u if i can talk my buddies into the trip, if not ill pull family from wyoming into the plan. please keep in touch thx:10sign:

come'on Uguide can't you be in 3 spots at the same time

By design, we have always tried to be as hands off as possible. We never wanted guests to feel like they were being an imposition and every group should be entitled to having their "own" experience. For those reasons it has never been an effort of mine to interface with the guests since I don't ever want to be an imposition on them.

I'm planning on doing one of your Uguide trips in 2011 with a group of my hunting partners. My question is, how far inadvance can I, and should I book the hunt?

JayhawkJ, about 1 year. Each group has 2 week right of first refusal to keep or release their hunt. Once released then it is open for booking. You would want to watch availability page about the time you want to hunt next year, this year, and certainly let me know your interests so I can keep you in second position should spot come open.

Stoney Butte Creek Now Open Week 10

FYI, we just opened Stoney Butte Creek Pheasant Camp for Week 10 booking which is an excellent value based on typical bird numbers in this area (some of highest in the state). Minimum group size is 6 and rate is $515/person for 4-night stay and 3-day hunt. This camp comes with landowner escort (semi-guided) at no additional charge. Guiding services are available upon request. This camp boasted a 75% rebook rate last year. Highest of any UGUIDE pheasant camp. The reason this slot is just coming open right now is the owner was planning on taking a vacation at this time but changed his plans.

Possible Guaranteed Hunt Option

One of my landowners came up with this idea and it may possibly have some merit.

We're thinking of offering a guaranteed pheasant hunt week 10 at Aberdeen North Pheasant Camp. How it would work is we would offer this hunt at the Week 4 rate ($715/person for 4-nights lodging and 3-days hunting) in exchange for a guarantee of a limit of native wild ringneck pheasants for each hunter. For each pheasant less than limit they get we would refund them the amount of the hunting fee prorated based on the daily gun fee divided by 3 (limit of birds is 3 per day). The lodging portion of the fee would not be refundable ($50/night/person).

If you are wondering what this hunt looks like you can just watch the video on this camps webpage from last year (one labeled Dec. 19, 2009).

If there is a blizzard and travel or hunting is not possible then we would refund 100% of total trip cost.

We could possibly offer this deal at Aberdeen South and maybe even for a minimum group size of 4 for week 10. The video on that page is alos from Week 10 last year and would help to watch to give good idea of what you might expect from hunt that time of year.

Let me know your thoughts on an idea like this.

Here is a photo from our Week 10 trip at this camp last year

I would not recommend such a plan. There is a lot more to pheasant hunting than getting a limit of birds. What you are offering is a pheasant hunting experience, which can be enjoyed with or without a limit. Also a limit of birds can depend on other factors such as shooting ability, pheasant finding skills, determination to find downed birds and so forth.

Uguide - I recommend that you stay focused on selling the experience and not the limit.

Disclaimer: Just my opinion and what do I know.

I would've given a similar recommendation. The thought of a discount when the birds just aren't there is a good one. From the client's view, it looks pretty sweet, but I'd expect this practice to bite you on the back side in time.

Guys, it is simply a classic risk reward for both hunter and landowner. The idea actually came about from a week 4 group that struggled with corn being in and owners idea was to offer late season hunt with the bird numbers and weather risk being removed from hunters risk. Weather is more of factor than the birds.

I appreciate the feedback and the focus on the total pheasant hunting experience.

Makes perfect sense and I think it is a great incentive. The blizzard part is best. I've been very apprehensive about booking a hunt b/c of weather and the corn harvest. This might get guys like me to reconsider. It's just that your plan sounded too good hearted for a business plan. I see where you're coming from. As long as your interests are "protected" I see this only as an incentive to potential clients.

On a side note, my wife balked at a UGUIDE hunt when I talked to her about it. She turned around and agreed to leasing some land in KS, though I know that would cost more money. I need some ammo to use on her and I don't mean the kind that comes out of a gun  for all you smart aces that want to suggest 4's, double-ott buck, or 7.62X39!!:D

The thing that I think is cool about UGUIDES camps is that it is the way hunting should be IMO. The pay less for less bird thing ruins it for me. From a money prospective it probably makes sense. I just don't like it on principle.

MMD, it simply brings some assurances for the hunter and also a "pay for performance" aspect to the landowner.

We had one group have dismal success on opener last year due to crop situation and I felt only way to win them back and show what SD could really deliver was offer a guaranteed hunt on opener as I knew a location that could deliver. Owner agreed and hunters liked it because it took out the risk and gave them assurances. When traveling from all over US and considering the numerous variables behind the quality of the destination it can be a deal maker for even the most conservative sportsmen.

Due to nature of nature it will not however become the way business is done at UGUIDE but just another option. For me more $ in landowners pocket means more habitat on the ground and I see to it that that happens.
